Does it matter which "set" these cards come from or are you meant to stick to one in particular?

what are they? gypsy style fortune cards or playing cards?

SoupDragon · 25/09/2004 12:01

Some sort of trading card/duelling game for boys. I have no idea what you're meant to do with them (and neither does DS1 (5) )

oh blimey I have no idea mine are way too young for that although I notice that the take along thomas TTE pieces have trading cards with them but I claim I don't know what they are for.

JuA · 25/09/2004 12:13

According to dh (who knows about these?!) you don't have to stick to one set - its OK to mix and match HTH

roisin · 25/09/2004 18:38

I had a look at ds1's friends stack of cards when he came to play, to try and figure them out ... I haven't got a clue! Tbh his friend didn't seem to have any idea either, and he's 7. (Ds1 doesn't have them - thankfully.)

miggy · 25/09/2004 18:40

Have asked the 10yr old and 7yr old gurus here-def doesnt matter but very infradig to play with japanese or french (etc) cards.
just in case you needed to know that

cp3 · 25/09/2004 18:41

Ooh useful thread. Ive just been asked to get some for my nephew for christmas and didnt have a clue what they were.

SoupDragon · 25/09/2004 19:20

So the ones they've got reduced in Tescos would have been fine... must go back and get some!!

I knew I could rely on MN. Thanks!

tigermoth · 26/09/2004 07:36

reduced in tesco! thanks for that info - good for christmas stocking fillers.

Soupdragon, my son and his friends certainly mix and match their sets. But some sets are more desirable than others and of course what is deemed desirable seems to vary from week to week. Anything that's new out is a good bet.

If you want exact advice about what is 'in', I'll ask my son.

SoupDragon · 26/09/2004 08:31

It wasn't a huge discount but they were reduced. Presumable they were old "less desirable" packs! As DS1 is only 5 (and DS2 wants them aged 3) I'm lucky that they have no concept of what's desireable or not. The cards themselves are desirable enough for them . This will, of course, change. Sigh. I remember my nephew with Pokemon cards.

I can't even remember what the first packs I bought DS1 were - something to do with a pharaoh I think. IIRC, there's a little code number on the cards. DS1s are all PGD with a number so presumably these are used to identify which set they come from.

I've just googled yu gi oh and it seems SO compicated!! I guess I'm just old...

no, you a just not a boy!

JJ · 06/11/2004 16:10

My son, in his first week at his new school, now 'needs' Yu-Gi-Oh cards. So how does he start? I've heard talk of starter sets? Where are they sold in Tesco? By the toys?

Any tips on the duels? Any tips in general? I thought there was t thread somewhere on the dangers of trading and the young guys getting ripped off, but can't find it. Tigermoth, I thought it was yours? If you find it, can you post a link here?

He's doing this with his allowance, btw, but has quite a bit saved (not all to spend on Yu Gi Oh!).

KangaMummy · 06/11/2004 16:15

DS saved up to get a pegasus starter deck £6 and then everyone else said they were moving on to another one so he got upset.

friend came over yesterday that has loads of them and theyn had 3 duels and DS lost every one.

I think it is awful and everyone gets so angry about it all the time,

btw a starter deck has 50 cards in and I think all starter decks are the same well the ones of the same set. IYSWIM

KangaMummy · 06/11/2004 16:16

got his in a model shop but argos etc do other sets.

turquoise · 06/11/2004 16:18

If they're not by the toys JJ, try the kiosk. Smiths and Woolies have them by the checkouts. There's several different starter sets, apparently "Pegasus" is the best but most expensive, "Yugi" is the best of the cheaper ones (direct from ds aged 9).

JJ · 06/11/2004 16:20

Thanks! It's good to know. I have a feeling this is going to end badly, but think I should let him do it.

turquoise · 06/11/2004 16:22

Well - I used to hate them when ds just seemed to play them because everyone else did, and there were fights and stealing etc. But when we moved to the States, they were the best ice breaker as ds is not sporty. He made all his friends by carrying his yugioh cards around!

JJ · 06/11/2004 16:55

Thanks turquoise! I'm hoping that will happen here, too.

At the moment I'm accosting women in the park as we walk home trying to make friends for the boys and me. Hmmm... do they have an adult equivalent of Yu Gi Oh?

KangaMummy · 06/11/2004 17:03

JJ I think maybe if it will have the same brill effect for your ds as it has for turquoise ds then it will be a great thing so go ahead and get them.

not the same as with ds he has been with same children for 6 years. IYSWIM

merlot · 06/11/2004 17:06

Aaaagh! Yu Gi Oh is all I ever here from my 7 year old son Load of rubbish imo, but ds cant get enough of them. I wouldnt worry about the rules, the kids seem to make them up as they go along (as you say they are far too complicated for us mere grownups!) Bit of a moneyspinner for Konami (manufacturer) if you ask me . They are now selling evolution starter decks, which are revamped starter decks. Bit like power rangers which seem to change every year!

That said, it promises to be a Yu Gi Oh Xmas in this house and the `craze' has lasted a whole year, so he's had fairly good play value from them. Just a shame they get left all over the house....!

tigermoth · 07/11/2004 09:31

jj, I see you found the other thread all by yourself.

IME Yu Gi Ho cards are good ice breakers, and easily transportable too, but as you have seen, they can cause all sorts of arguments. You have to have rules about swapping and playing IME. Also, sadly, be aware that some children your son meets might cheat and steal his most collectable cards, especially if your son is new to the game.

What a pity you can't make the Coram's fields party and accost me and my son with his yugi ho cards. If your son needs a tutor, my son will gladly step in.

mumwithnoname · 07/11/2004 09:36

No idea really my ds2 (6) and his friends seem to make the rules up as they go along!!!
