My Little brother lives with me in my council rented flat and thismorning was running a bath, he hadnt told me and me and ds were playing in the living room so didnt hear the bath running but he forgot about it and left it running for over an hour, i know he didnt mean to and i had a go at him for it (he is 14 so should have more sense) but i soaked and mopped it all up and it all seemed ok untill about 20 minuites ago when two council men came and knocked on my door and asked if the washing machine had overflowed. I told them that it was the bath and i have now been told that if i am not insured and there is any damage downstairs to the people below me i am responsible for the costs of repairs. I am really worried about how much this could be as i am a single mum with no other help. What are the costs and damages likeley to be as i have no idea and i dont know whether or not to go down and appoligise with chocolates as i live in an area where im not too sure what the response would be??
Im so worried about all this has anyone got any experience or advice please?

one of my children stuffed toilet paper in the sink and it overflowed...had water dripping through a light downstairs so just turned it off. Then my neighbour down below phoned to say water was seeping through her walls!!! Her flat cam off worse than mine!

Her fire alarm got drenched but it dried out and dp checked it out, there were also 'wet' patches on the ceiling but they can be painted over.

Hope there isn't too much damage.

It sounds as though you got on well with the people down below you, i have never even spoken with my downstairs neighbours!!!
That makes me aven more worried that a sink did that much damage when we had a bath running for over an hour and by the time i did realise there was abot a centimetre of water on my bathroom floor
I am also worried for the internal damage it may have done as i know that i wouldnt be able to afford hundreds straight off.
Can the council evict us for this as this is my main concern.....
