What to wear to an English wedding in autumn?

I've been to only 2 weddings in this country, and each time I was probably not dressed appropriately (my tastes are a little avant-garde) to the point that at MIL's wedding, an old Windsor biddy approahced me and said, "You must be the AMERICAN daugher-in-law." (I wasn't dressed in any typical American fashion, btw.)

ANYWAY, I'm now SAHM-ing and have NO time to buy something new, but this afternoon the kids and I are off to MIL in Windsor so I can try on hats in order to hire one (her idea) to go with my chosen outfit.

So do I go for a suit? A dress? A skirt and top? I get the feelings that suits are what's done here often for weddings, but I'm by nature more of a dress peson. That said, my enthusasm for dressing up has waned a bit. . .I'd be happy just to be told what to wear and I hardly even care what it is.

Would wear whatever you'll be most yourself in - so a dress. And a coat for all that standing around. (p.s. The hat will blow away regardless.

Thanks, all.

Will have a plunder thru my closet now. If I do go for a suit (i.e. if there's no suitable dress in there) should it be more dressy than, say, a work type suit?

I have a similar problem - wedding on 23rd October and don't know what to wear. Doesn't help either that I was largely pg this time last year and so have minimal suitable things to wear. Also a lack of money....

We are going to a wedding on 22nd October and I have same dilemma - what to wear??? Not sure yet - may go for a nice warnish skirt and top, and then change into a dress for the party. I normally wear a dress for a wedding though, but they have been in the summer.

Expatkat - you could wear even a black suit with a bright top underneath and then get a hat to match the top - accessorise have some nice ones in and they aren't expensive, maybe even black and whatever other colour you choose shoes too??

Although quite an expensive range fenn wright manson show great ways of putting differnt fabrics and accessories together , great to look at for ideas on how to wear things. I love the silver shadow collection.

I'm stuck too - have three weddings coming up: 30th October, 13th November and 27th November. Your outfit sounds nice, beety - hadn't thought of Hennes, they are pretty reasonable aren't they?

Wow--love that fenn wright manson stuff, melsy. . .wish I had time to buy something but instead will look perfectly OK with a long fitted black skirt, an irridescent blue/green top (vintage in style) and a black jacket, with a vintage flower pin (pink stones, fake), an outfit inspired by all of your suggestions. (Would have chosen a dress, Cab, but couldn't find a non-summer one in the closet.)

Now let's see if I can find a hat. . .

Thanks for sorting me out, everyone.
