Ebay Question

I'm a bit confused, I've bought a few bits and bobs on Ebay and paid for them using my card through Paypal. I tried to pay for something last night and it said that the transaction exceeded the sender limit on my account. I've always paid as soon as I've won something. It then asked me to verify my account and direct debit details. Has anyone else had to do this?

no experience of buying from ebay sory but I think there is some fraudulent thing going on. apparently they never ask you to verify your credit details - so if you have contact your card supplier immediately

discoinferno · 23/09/2004 07:59

that sounds like a fraud. Send the email to back to ebay - someone will get the address for you I can't rem it and they will veryify if it is fraudulent or not. Never re enter your payment details ebay never ask for them.

spoof at ebay.co.uk

As it wasn't an email this sounds genuine. You can only send a certain amount of money through paypal before you have to verify your credit card. If I remember correctly this involves paying paypal $1.95 and then they credit it back to your account. You then have to enter a number that appears on your credit card statement in to your paypal account. This is to try and stop fraudulent transactions and money laundering I think.
This does however take a few days to show up on your credit card statement online so can I suggest that you send a cheque for this transaction and sort the paypal out ready for next time. I really dislike Paypal- the old system that ebay had was much less hassle HTH

pixie - Im glad someone is awake a this hour of the morning. I thought an email was involved somewhere.

Hi Disco-Not from what I read. If it is an email then do send to ebay. I had one the other week threatening suspension of my account. Luckily my dh trades on ebay so has warned me about these but not everyone has and it's very scary/worrying isn't it disco? I'm not very awake- just went through this myself a few months ago with paypal so it's fresh in my memory. It was worse for me though- I had about £200 in my paypal account and I had to do this before I could withdraw it as there is also a withdrawal limit on paypal! bit of a cheek really as they don't tell you until you're trying to withdraw the money . Spose it's in the small print but who reads that?

gscrym · 23/09/2004 08:34

Thanks Pixiefish, I spent almost an hour last night trying to sort this out. I'll get the numbers from my statement the next time I look.

Its so that you register for extended use on Paypal................nothing to worry about honestly.

Did it say you need to sign up for extended use?
If this was on the actual paypal site then it isnt a con.

if it happened on the ebay site, then no prob, but beware if you get an email asking you to verify your details. this happened to mil. she forwarded the email to ebay and they said it was fake. they will never ever ask you to verify your details on an email.

harrassedmum · 23/09/2004 22:49

I had the same thing as pixiefish when i first used paypal, should be ok

lydialemon · 23/09/2004 23:22

Just did this myself, it's pretty easy if a bit time consuming - took us over a week to get it sorted out. Curbed my spending for a while though, so probably a good thing in the end!

bobs · 23/09/2004 23:33

I stopped using ebay for a while as I kept on getting fraudulent emails asking for details -NEVER go through to Ebay or Paypal via an email if they ask you to - it will not be from them. also ebay puts your name on their emails (not dear member). Always go through the proper web site
Have just bought something, and have had no emails confirming this - thought I'd blocked the real ebay site by mistake -no, so checked email preferences on ebay and I should have got any emails confirming my win - weird or what!!

pixiefish · 24/09/2004 07:32

bobs- it can take up to 24 hours for those emails to come through.

SecondhandRose · 24/09/2004 14:58

I've had two emails recently saying my account was suspended and asking for my personal details. Very, very good impersonations. But they are not from Ebay.
