Before you all fall about laughing and thinking 'Bunglies lost it again', spare a thought for people like me who REALLY do have a phobia about slugs and snails!
Yesterday I was outside planting in my little garden, and I put my foot down, with only socks on and squashed a snail.....I screamed to the extent my neighbour came out all v. embarrasing. I had to throw my socks away and scrubbed my foot, last night I had nightmares of a snail! Honestly! Now all of this has got out of proportion, but I am afraid to touch a plant without surgical gloves on in case there is a snail on it. I put down slug and snail pellets (bird friendly) and yes you may remember 'slimewatch' as I used my video camera to watch it's demise. However I have been told by my neighbour that the pellets actually attract the things that is why I have so many in my garden. I found 25 on the patio yesterday and 3 slugs....I have heard that crushed eggshells stops them as they dont like sliding across them, but not in my garden, they are eating all the new polyanthus I planted.
I know it's funny but I am really scared of them and I just wondered if anyone has any bird friendly remedies to get rid of them? Is it just me or is there anyone else with a slug/snail phobia?

Ermmmmm, you do gardening wearing only Socks !!!!

With your phobia I'd have thought Wellies and thick gloves were a must.

Salt is a fave in our house.

blossomhill · 22/09/2004 14:07

No Bunglie I too have an absolute fear/phobia about them. What is there purpose in life other then to slime over everything? The worst thing that could have possibly happened to me was when I went into the garden bare foot to get some washing in and crunched on a snail. I was seriously damaged by that and absolutely freaked

beer in a container that the snails/slugs can get into but out of is a good way to reduce your crawling nation population

poor you having a phobia!

Easy I am in a wheelchair...I don't have any shoes let alone wellies, but have tried Tesco carrier bags when it has been raining!

I tried salt but it makes them ooze green slime and then I have to clean it up as the birds wont eat them....
Beer sounds good...do I just open a can and put it on the patio or poor it into a saucer?

Oh God slug pubs are fab. A yog pot in the ground full of larger hay presto. The only probelm is you'll then have to remove a yog pot full of slugs!!!

Bunglie · 22/09/2004 14:13

Do I bury the yogurt pot?
I have a 'helping hand' that picks things up off the floor if I drop them, so I keep one just for snails....I know I am sad!
Any particular beer...I only have Carlsburg?

We bury them so the rim of the pot is flush with the earth. Any larger. Carlesberg will do but we just buy cheapie stuff for the slugs, sad I know.

Bunglie · 22/09/2004 14:26

Not sad at all....I will buy them a can a day if it keeps them away!
Thank you all I am off to open my 'pub for slugs'
and I am V. grateful.

no you are not a troll bunglie .. I believe you lent me several sleeping bags for the Summer party good luck with the beer

you can use any big pots old milk cans work well. Dig the old pot into the soil

anything with a smaller entry way is good

Bunglie · 22/09/2004 14:42

Thanks everybody....However Secur I am not sure I needed the image of 200 snails AND them inside your home...OMG! I just could not cope with that
I have a milk bottle which has quite a wide neck but is a lot narrow than the base, so have half filled it with Carlsburg and I am waiting for it to stop 'spitting with rain' and will go and plant it!
I can't wait now for them to dive in and get 'sloshed' Bye Bye slimey beasties
Thanks all.
