If I was poor and had no money to feed my children ( which really should not be happening in this day and age but does) I would not think twice about taking something from the shelf at Tesco.

ladylush · 09/08/2007 10:11

When I was a child my mum (a single parent)was poor (she worked full-time but earned something crazy like six grand a year). We often ate egg and chips (not bought chips) for dinner as it is one of the cheapest meals you can make and our poor cat sometimes had to eat the cheapest catfood you could buy from Iceland which she hated She sacrificed everything for us - apart from cigarettes. If you are on a low income and smoke there will probably not be enough money to go round. I think cigarettes cost about £5.00 now (I'm not sure as I don't smoke)so if you smoke 20 a day that's already £35. If the OP's friend gets £50 a week that means she will only have £15 left to buy food with - which obviously is not enough. However, I don't know if the woman in question smokes.

If the moral argument doesn't work for you, what about the practical? The risks must outweigh the benefits, surely? You get caught, arrested, prosecuted. What does a conviction to do you? You will be lucky ever to get a job. This might not be relevant now, but in the future? When the children are grown up? What about your friends and family?

BTW have addressed this post to "you" meaning either or both of you and your friend.

ladylush · 09/08/2007 12:24

The OP has vanished.

Quattrocento · 09/08/2007 12:29

Perhaps she's gone to Sainsburys

ladylush · 09/08/2007 12:36

wolfgirl, just in case no-one answered you. A troll is someone who deliberately posts something offensive or inflammatory or contravrsial to start a ruck or for attention-seeking purposes. They are not usually regular posters. When peole start saying Trip Trap, or living under a bridge -it's a reference to 3 billy goats gruff and means ''methinks this a troll..''

fawkeoff · 09/08/2007 13:03

do u not live near an aldi, netto, lidl or farmfoods store????,aldi have a fab variety of foods that are cheaper and some are better value for money.

fawkeoff · 09/08/2007 13:14

i understand that certain ppl struggle more financially, why is she only on 50 quid a week????? she should be claiming income support if she is a single parent.....they will give her more than 50 quid a week

GoingThroughChanges · 09/08/2007 13:31

She should call her CAB & find out if she is claiming all her benefits.

She should get anyway, child benefit & child tax credit. Does the child's father contribute financially? If not, she should call CSA & try to get them to chase him up. After all, it is his child that needs fed too.

I actually feel very sorry for your friend. she is trying her best to provide for her child, but in the process she is breaking the law

I agree with the others about Lidl & Aldi.

Bouquetsofdynomite · 09/08/2007 20:23

I'm shocked at people saying they'd do the same, I would rather swallow my pride and beg from everyone I knew than shoplift. I mean FFS, why stop at shoplifting?

ladylush · 09/08/2007 20:46

There aren't many saying they'd do the same - but there are a few acknowledging that she could be genuinely poor.

j20baby · 09/08/2007 21:10

how can someone only get £50 a week?
i'm on IS and manage (yep Asda smart price and Netto's )

do some people gt less than what is given on IS? genuine question

ladylush · 09/08/2007 21:11

I don't know the answer to that as I haven't been on benefits. The OP needs to come back and answer some questions.

j20baby · 09/08/2007 21:27

i mean, i know JSA would be less than IS, but you wouldn't get that if you where supporting DC's would you?

its just, people go on about single parents being on IS and not being able to manage financially, but i do, so i just wondered how come other's can't?

(sorry, bit of a thread hijack really, but have been wondering)

verysweatybetty · 09/08/2007 21:34

mt mate ahd bf who worked but didnt bother giving her no contribut to the food bills or nothing, her rent was getting into arrers and she only had her tax creds which she never changed her sercumstances from when he was on the dole, so she had £40 a week to but all food gas and elec plus child benifit, i felt sorry 4 her

ladylush · 10/08/2007 09:05

j20 it might be difficult if she had debts to pay off as one gets into a debt cycle and if she's on job seekers allowance she wouldn't earn enough to settle her debts.

j20baby · 10/08/2007 10:26

Good point LL, i never thought of that. i've always been real careful because my mum is awful with money.

fawkeoff · 10/08/2007 10:33

My SIL used to claim IS for her and 3 kids....including child bendefit she was recieving just over 200 quid a week, plus having her rent and council tax paid for her.She even got a loan off the social of 1500 quid to pay off debts and it was interest free....they took about a tenner a week off her. There is help for her instead of stealing

ladylush · 10/08/2007 16:09

Yes I agree she should go and seek help. As I said, I don't condone stealing and would never do it myself.
