Not sure where to put this but thought it might get some attention here....

My BF and her DH earn about 30k between them. They have two DDs and she says she only gets £40 a month in family tax credit. I'm sure this is far to little can anyone advise??

if you go to the website and fill in some details, about how many kids you have, wages, hours worked and any childcare you pay, they work it out for you online...then if you think its worth it, click on apply and they send you the forms.

bundle · 21/09/2004 14:43

sounds way too low. the ceiling is about £60k I think.

taramac · 21/09/2004 14:43

Sounds about right - similar to my dp and me.

Titania · 21/09/2004 14:44

how old are the dds?

Titania · 21/09/2004 14:44

you get a higher rate if one is under a year old

popsycal · 21/09/2004 14:46

sounds way too low to me......

taramac · 21/09/2004 14:50

My dp and me earn just @£30k and have 2ds's and we get £36 a month in tax credit.

MancMum · 21/09/2004 14:52

I get 26 quid for 2 kids and earn way way more than that - would get it checked..

popsycal · 21/09/2004 14:52

i am similar to man mum but get roughly what bunnyrabbit BF gets.....
i do get some money to help with childcar though and on have one ds

LunarSea · 21/09/2004 15:03

Sounds about right. This shows last years figures, although they haven't changed dramatically, and you'll see that with two kids, the amount of basic credits you get with 2 children is the same for a huge range of incomes - from about £21k to £54k! They should be getting extra for childcare if they're paying it though.

fio2 · 21/09/2004 15:05

we only get 10 pound a week and my dh earns the same

I earn nothing

bunnyrabbit · 21/09/2004 15:12

Thanks guys. What's the website she should be looking at?

This is the site - will try to do link!

If that doesnt work its www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk and click on tax credits on left hand side.

Dingle · 21/09/2004 18:53

Fio, that can't be right surely!
Does dd get DLA?

hana · 21/09/2004 19:02

also they might qualify for childcare relief as well, both partners have to be working minimum of 16 hours though.

lydialemon · 21/09/2004 19:05

We earn just under £30K, and have 3 kids and get around that too.

Sad to say it sounds right BR!

Mirage · 21/09/2004 19:57

Sounds about right to me to.I work 20 hours,DH full time & we were given 97p a month towards childcare costs last year!.

I did ring to query it & told them that it wasn't worth me going back to work & she said that she sympathised & heard the same thing all the time-mainly because the income brackets are so wide. She told me that you have to both be on very low incomes to get anything worthwhile,& that unless you were poor enough to qualify for benefits,or rich enough not to have to worry, you were stuck with the situation.

nutcracker · 21/09/2004 20:01

I think it is about right.

I was going to find a job until i checked out the tax credit website and worked out that we would actually be worse off.

Tessiebear · 21/09/2004 20:37

That sounds right BR - the kind of "cut off" point to go from getting £40 quid to getting nothing at all is about 28k We only get £40 a month too

luckymum · 22/09/2004 12:37

Fio - if your dd gets DLA you should be getting the Disability element too - get on the phone to them!!!

fio2 · 22/09/2004 14:44

oh dear! i never realised

luckymum · 22/09/2004 14:56

Well you should get some back pay Fio, but no drinking to celebrate !

kkgirl · 22/09/2004 17:19

Finally got myself together with the figures and changes to details, rang them up and got a recorded message to say computers were down, might I like to ring in a few days!!!
Tried website, had to register and then was told PIN number would be with me within 7 days. So much for progress

helsi · 22/09/2004 17:23

Yes its right - she won't qualify for family tax credit as they earn too much - they probably just get the child tax credit which is a standard amount I think.

tallulah · 28/09/2004 11:52

fio, when our DLA was renewed, I noticed we get the higher rate care component. That qualifies the child as "severely disabled" for tax credit purposes. I hadn't realised because I don't consider DS2 to be severely disabled. Worth checking. (We got back pay of £1000. I'm not convinced it's right, so its sitting in a savings account! )
