I know we are not starting the discussions on this month's books until September - but I was just wondering how people are getting on?

I'm looking forward to the end of the summer holidays when hopfully I can get a few minutes to myself. At the moment - by the time the kids are in bed ( following an action packed day ?! ) I collapse in a heap and can just about manage a couple of pages.

The mind is willing but the spirit is week.
I can manage the odd wine however

I must admit I'm struggling a bit at the moment. Determined to finish a couple though

bettys · 23/08/2002 21:33

....doing very well on the wine front!

Did you know you can get a bottle of organic white wine from Tesco for £3.99? Goes down very nicely and you can still get up smiling at 6.30am.

Nearly time for the October books....Fionn, if you're around would you like to kick it off?

Fionn · 29/09/2002 14:46

Bettys - yes, no problem. Do you want me to start with comments on all three or just one?
Also, any suggestions for November reading yet? It sometimes takes a couple of weeks to get the books ordered to my local library from my borough's various libraries so I wouldn't mind knowing what I need to order next.

CAM · 29/09/2002 17:04

I'm going to try to join in the Last Orders thread even though haven't finished. Msy just have by Oct 1 though! I think we need longer than a month, maybe 6-8 weeks?

SueDonim · 29/09/2002 17:07

Gosh, thanks for that timely reminder!! I've read two of the three books I suggested for Nov 1st but I can't remember the third one. Will have to do a search on Mumsnet.

XAusted · 29/09/2002 19:39

What's the Mumsnet Book Club?

XAusted - this came up in August (can't do links but it's there under Other Subjects), the idea being that 3 books are chosen every month for discussion the following month by whoever's read them and wants to say something about them. You can read/comment on one or two or all three. I nominated the three that are up for discussion in October - Last Orders by Graham Swift, The End of the Affair by Graham Greene and Regeneration by Pat Barker. The idea being that we'll all have a glass of wine at our PC's as we discuss the books!

WideWebWitch · 29/09/2002 21:42

I have the Kazuo Ishiguro one here but haven't got around to it, although have found time to read quite a lot else since this book club started (so it can't have tempted me enough I guess). Have read Last Orders but ages ago so might be able to join in with that discussion. When is it starting?

Fionn · 29/09/2002 21:48

WWW I'll start it tomorrow or Tuesday.

bettys · 30/09/2002 11:00

Fionn, you're right, we need to know books for reading in November and December. Could you nominate a couple of people please, or is there anyone who is bursting with suggestions?

A reminder of books for reading in October:

Bad Blood - Lorna Sage
The Last Time They Met - Anita Shreve
Lost Geography - Charlotte Bacon

bettys · 30/10/2002 12:09

Well it's nearly time for the next round of books as chosen by SueDonim....would you like to get the ball rolling, SueDonim?

What does everyone want to do next? I get the impression people like to have books suggested, and are reading them, but don't want to comment. Should we keep going (in which case we need suggestions for the next month's books) or just use the 'Read Any Good Books Lately' thread for exchanging views/ideas?

SueDonim · 30/10/2002 13:49

Okay, will write something in the morning, Bettys.

Xanthe · 30/10/2002 14:30

Havc not been on Mumsnet for 4 months owing to leaving work and not having access to a computer, but I'm now on-line at home thank goodness. I think this is a great idea in theory, but with all my other commitments plus the fact that I'm not a fast reader, I would not be able to read three books in a month and I wonder if this is putting people off. Could we just have one recommended book each month, which we used to do in the book club I belonged to - pre children!

SueDonim · 30/10/2002 14:47

Xanthe, I think the idea is that you can read as many of the books each month as you wish. So if you just want to read one, that's good, and reading all three is good too. It just gives everyone a bit more choice. Welcome back, BTW!

bettys · 30/10/2002 16:02

Nice to hear from you again, Xanthe! As SueDonim says, it's just for choice really that there are three books. I've only read 2 of this month's, and I've only managed that because the trains have all been delayed (I only get to read on the way to work). However....would you like to choose next month's book or books? We could try with just one if you like, and see if we get more response.

Xanthe · 31/10/2002 12:20

Bettys - I'll let Suedonim choose the next month's books as she was going to do so before my posting on this thread and I'll have a think for a future month. Thank you both for welcoming me back. I have found the books thread the most useful part of this website. The reason I still haven't read many of the suggestions is that I'm spending too much time on Mumsnet!

SueDonim · 31/10/2002 13:07

I've written my bit and posted it on a new thread "Book Group - October Books" In fact, I'll try and make a link to it....... Here it is!
