Yes or no?

  • me I'm a big resounding yes - my life would be hell if I didn't (although I'd probably be a lot fitter ).

well i let my 2 year old do it....

wildwoman · 03/08/2007 09:53

of course, who doesn't?

FLIER · 03/08/2007 09:54

depends on the child. If they lived in a bungalow and weren't used to stairs, then possibly not

Yes, well, she's 4 now but she has dyspraxia and other SN even.

We live in a 2nd floor flat at present and I can't carry both her and her 2 stone sister up, so she has to walk it.

EscapeFrom · 03/08/2007 09:54

Ummm, not at JUST 3, he was very very impetuous, and very cl;umsy. Once he was well into 3, yes.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 03/08/2007 09:55

ahh now I must admit I do have stairgates.....but that's more to keep them out of places I don't want them than to protect from stairs (as witnesses by the fact that DS1 had 4 tumbles downstairs, DS2 has had 1)........

Gobbledigook · 03/08/2007 09:55

I'd certainly let my nearly two and a half year old walk down steps - but I wouldn't let her jump down four brick steps onto a concrete surface, no. And I would be very, very angry if I found out she was doing this unsupervised, at a nursery.

Twiglett · 03/08/2007 09:57

are you sure you mean 3?

2 I could understand but 3?

peanutbear · 03/08/2007 09:58

Yes my 3 year old walked up and down stairs and steps but he is very steady on his feet and was from the age of 2

TheQueenOfQuotes · 03/08/2007 09:58

aloha - it's not a nursery it's a school.

The point is, this child wasn't walking, he was jumping - down four brick steps onto a concrete surface, completely unsupervised, in an environment where his parents had a reasonable expectation that he would be supervised and prevented from doing something so clearly dangerous.

aloha · 03/08/2007 09:59

He was obviously in the nursery part of the school at three. he wouldn't be at school proper at three.

Twiglett · 03/08/2007 09:59

just seen other thread I think the relevant bit is "only one teacher on duty supervising 59 pupils"

for 3 year olds? I thought there were minimum stff-child ratios for children under 5

certainly in our pre-school there are 3 staff members for 25 children

GreebosWhiskers · 03/08/2007 10:04

I let my 2.5yo dd walk up & down the 5 concrete steps leading up to our front gate. She's very independent (always has been) & won't allow anyone to help her.

That said she did tumble off the side of the steps on our way out yesterday & land in the garden - the long grass cushioned her fall but the rose bush scratched her arm. Didn't stop her insisting on tackling them again herself tho'.

aloha - several children are coming out of the school together - one decides to jump - how do you stop it happening? hold the hand of each and every one?

nailpolish · 03/08/2007 10:05

i let my 2yr old go up and down steps

sometimes im not even in the same room

i think she did it before she was 2

omg

aloha · 03/08/2007 10:12

Nailpolish, for a start, children that young should not have unsupervised access to brick steps, and be left to play wild jumping games onto concrete with nobody present. A playground for nursery children should be safe and supervised. I have just been to see various nurseries for dd and all have enclosed, safe play areas and are well supervised. It's not that difficult or unreasonable to expect this.
