I discovered the other day, through conversation, that one of my friends doesn't have any contents insurance. She lives in a rented flat so doesn't need buildings insurance but I thought she would have had contents covered.

One of the first things I did when i got my first flat was to sort out insurance, and I had very few posessions at the time. I know should something drastic happen the insurance won't replace sentimental items like photo's etc but at least you'd be able to start again with the basics of furniture etc.

Is it common for people not to have contents insurance? I've never known someone not to have any before and it's surprised me.

Try working out your annual fee, multiply by ten years, work out how many things you have actually had replaced with contents insurance (not just had stolen). Take second figure away from first and you may well find that you've shelled out lots of money for very little risk.

We live in a high risk area so premiums are high. We have had hardly any goods stolen and the one time we were broken into it was because someone left the door open. Duh. Anyway, I've not had insurance for years and when I did have it it never paid back.

i long since decided that insurance of all kinds was a big scam. they always find a way out of paying ime. im prob going to regret that at some point, but...

my parents never had contents insurance and we have none now. i think if finances were tighter i may think more of it (as starting again would be more difficult with a lower income) but right now? i just want to get me and the kids out. 'things' are replacable and we (v luckily) have the luxury of being able to afford it if necc.

found lunalovegoodasgold's post very validating!
