When should you start planning for retirement?

My question isn't about savings.

Dh and I are in our early 50s and our youngest dc is 11. We've saved all our working lives, and intended to retire one day. We still hope to be able to actually retire, albeit maybe later than we originally thought. (And maybe with less disposable income, too!)

But we've spent years leading side-by-side lives, me as a SAHM and then working part-time, him in an intellectually demanding full-time job and having different hobbies, different interests and different physical abilities. When we come together it tends to be family-based.

So how and when do you plan for the change in the relationship? I'm under no illusions that it will be like it was pre-children!

I would aim to develop some shared interests - start with one and take it from there.

DH and I have different hobbies but we both enjoy cooking and eating together and also go for a walk together whenever we can.

Tbh, I'd work on the relationship now.
