If you would like to add your name to the protest about this ruling in Nigeria under local, not federal law, just do a search on Yahoo! for the name Amina Lawal. You will get the Amnesty International website and be able to email the President of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Ambassador.

She is held to be guilty for having a child while unmarried. The father is being let off for lack of evidence.

Please do this . Women are suffering in Nigeria under this punitive law which is not upheld by anything in the Koran

Good idea Bushpig & Robinw. I'm horrified that this can be allowed to happen, so have followed Robinw's link to sign a letter.

Lets hope that Amnesty & others can help this woman.

ScummyMummy · 20/08/2002 08:47

Thanks robinw and bushpig. I just can't believe this ruling. It seems even more baffling than the last one as I believe that they had mutally agreed to divorce way before she conceived the baby with another man. There seems to be no suggestion that anyone has been harmed in any way by her actions. Not that I would endorse stoning for anyone whose actions WERE harmful, of course.
I do hope her appeal is successful. Hopefully having the eyes of the world on them will make the Sharia(sp) courts think twice about actually imposing such a horrific sentence. It's hard to know if our emails will help as I believe the Nigerian government is generally reluctant to intervene in the decisions of the Islamic courts... I hope they will though.
What a beautiful woman and baby as well- not that that is relevant one way or other.

aloha · 20/08/2002 09:25

I know this is controversial but I really hate the Islamic religion (not keen on any religion really but this has to be the worst). Did anyone hear the lunatic on the Today programme defending it this am? Why isn't our government up in arms? Is it because they are scared of offending the muslim population of Britain? This is absolutely appalling and thanks robinw for the website addresses. Sharia Law seems to be another name for barbarism.

Tinker · 20/08/2002 10:04

Thanks for the link robinw.

aloha - you're a brave woman

nics1stbaby · 20/08/2002 10:16

I read about this only this morning. Thank you for the links, I have signed the letter. This cannot be allowed to happen.

angharad · 20/08/2002 10:23

The only thing is that other women who have received the same sentence have had it quashed on appeal. It does make you wonder about what goes on Saudi Arabia and other "closed" Islamic countries though. I have read that it is not unusual for the family of a woman who has had a relationship outside marriage to kill her themselves. In the book "Princess" there's a family who drown their daughter in the swimming pool.

winnie1 · 20/08/2002 11:13

Thanks for the link. Heard this on the news yesterday and feel utterly appalled. This judgement is utterly barbaric.

Lil · 20/08/2002 12:05

Aloha, there's nothing wrong with not liking a religion, I guess its when innocent people that follow it, are disliked that it gets racist. Having said that it really would be nice to hear a muslim stand up and condemn Sharia Law for once. Maybe then Islam could hold its head up. But no, where was the outcry in the muslim world as to what was happening in Afghanistan and what is happening still in Saudi , Nigeria and other such countries? The muslim world is quick enough to slag off other religions/countries, it would be nice if they could lobby to get there own house in order first!!

Grr, I get so cross with the misogny of it all!

Hi Lil, that's exactly my attitude, so thanks. Don't care about the colour of a person's skin, it's their ideas that I'm concerned with (particularly if they translate into thinking that stoning mothers to death is a good idea). And yes, where is the condemnation from muslims of this atrocity?

musica · 20/08/2002 16:03

I totally agree that this is a barbaric ruling. I think the reason these laws are not condemmed in Nigeria is that the Law, tough though it is, is actually better than that which it replaced - I don't know all the facts, but I heard a report yesterday that said the people of Nigeria were so relieved when the previous regime was overturned that they will put up with this! Aren't we lucky to live in UK! (Those of us that do).

WideWebWitch · 20/08/2002 18:52

I've signed the Amnesty letter too. Agree, barbaric ruling.

lilibet · 20/08/2002 19:00

Yes sent mine too, how can these peope beleive that this is a just law? How can they carry out this sentence? It's just horrid the way that some women have to live.

Zoe · 20/08/2002 19:05

Just signed too, thanks Bushpig and robinw for letting us know how to do that.

Why oh why oh why oh why???

Marina · 20/08/2002 19:42

Thanks for the link Robinw, have just signed too.
Can't quite understand how this is happening in Nigeria, which is not an Islamic state. I guess it must be in one of the provinces that implements Sharia law. How this sort of thing can be done in the name of any God is unbelievable.
Well done to Merton Amnesty for getting an e-appeal off the ground so quickly, I hope they get strong support across the UK.

helenmc · 20/08/2002 21:29

have signed too. for my tuppence - not all muslim is bad. I have a close friend who is very religious but I think it's the fanatics are the ones to blame not just muslim - think about wacko seige (is that how you spell it) , Rev Ian Pailey (how can he have the nerve to call himself reverend) and the crusades, and the holy inquisition etc etc

Jbr · 20/08/2002 22:39

Some other religions are almost as bad. Christianity has plenty to be ashamed of.

In the book of Matthew it equates adultery with murder, as though the two are as bad as each other.

That's an atrocious thing to say. And how many people still think you should be married before you have children? Ok, they might not do this, but the principle that you should be married, is there.

We need to stamp on all forms of oppression.

aloha · 20/08/2002 23:25

Yes, but some forms of oppression are worse than others. Can't think of one worse than stoning to death.

Gosh, thanks Sobernow. Actually, when I look at what I've posted sometimes, even I don't agree with me (esp after a glass of wine!).
