Dd1 just got grease all over her school polo shirt, after messing with the newly installed radiator in her room. I can't find any cleaning tips on tipking or howtocleananything, apart from using dry cleaning fluid, which I don't tend to put in my weekly shop. What can I do to get it out?!

Wash it with handsoap (the one with more moisturiser the better) under very cold water, if it doesn't go leave it to soak in cold water with the sopa or any product suggested. Try to avoid hot water or hanging it near radiators, the warmth fixates the grease.

Thanks, will try that. She only has 2 of the blooming things

swarfega!!!!!!!!

jampot · 16/09/2004 17:14

lemonjuice to dissolve the grease?

SoupDragon · 16/09/2004 17:14

Washing up liquid, rubbed in all over it. Then wash and cross your fingers.

Have you chescked howtocleananything.com or whatever it's called?

lou33 · 16/09/2004 17:15

Have none and am housebound with no car atm. Need fixes with household stuff.

I looked grease up in my household hints and tips book. "scape it off and wash at high temp if possible using washing soda and borax to emulsify the grease and release the dirt. Hydroygen peroxide and paraffin oil also disolve grease. use dry cleaning solvent for residual stains and dry with hair dryer."

I have no idea if this will work. I remember when DS got tar from beach on clothes we used swarfega from a petrol staion.

HTH good luck.

Ooh will try lemon juice or washing up liquid. Tried htca, and they keep blithering on about buying dry cleaning fluid

SoupDragon · 16/09/2004 17:17

Damn. Recommends dry cleaning fluid

lou33 · 16/09/2004 17:17

I have no washing soda, borax, hydrogen peroxide or parrafin oil either

Bloody kids, I TOLD her not to touch it.

Ooooh - look here!

SoupDragon · 16/09/2004 17:20

Snort!

"I have had great success with Cheese Whiz. Yes, that goopy orange stuff, when smeared generously on a grease stain, takes it right out in the laundry."

lou33 · 16/09/2004 17:23

Cheese whizz?!!!

Do you think a dissolved dishwahser tablet may do it?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 16/09/2004 17:25

Do you have anything to lose by trying it?

According to Sharon from Terrace, British Columbia, Canada; "If you have a set in grease stain, just spray the stain with WD-40 and let it sit about 30 minutes. Then, treat as a fresh grease stain!" so if it doesn't work, just spray more grease on it and try again tomorrow.

lou33 · 16/09/2004 17:28

Scampers off to try...

I will report back later with the results

That site is wonderful. Under the "coca cola" section there is the followng tip: "One of my sisters in law has a very white skin, those that are extremely difficult to tan; she found out that applying coke instead of a tanning cream did the trick" WTF??

lou33 · 16/09/2004 17:36

Sorry , but HAHAHAHA!

Shirt is nestling in dissolved dishwasher tablet. If it doesnt work I am going to put it in the dishwasher on a cold wash.

talcum powder is very good for getting rid of grease stains. Just powder it on, leave over night and brush off in the morning. I haven't tried it on colored grease (like machine oil), just food grease.

jampot · 16/09/2004 22:18

SD - apparently drinking copious amounts of carrot juice has a similar but not necessarily "bronzing" effect

lou33 · 17/09/2004 08:58

Thanks all. I have given up, as of last night nothing had worked, so I sent her in her spare one, and will have to buy her another.

Lou before you buy a new skirt, try ironing the skirt with brown paper over it, this takes out some of the grease and then the Vanish oxy rub a small pile into the stain leave it an hour and then soak it overnight in a vanish oxy solution. I am obsessed about stains and have found this works really well.

Twinkie · 17/09/2004 09:57

Fairy Liquid dabbed on and rubbed in along with abit of non bio powder will dod the trick just before you stick it in the washing machine - every stain in our house gets a dab of fairy before it goes in the machine anyway - much bettera nd cheaper than these spray things!!

lou33 · 17/09/2004 14:32

Ok, lastditch attempt later today. I will decide which one lucky dip style.

Washing soda is the best. But as you don't have that, mix some baking soda (Bicarb) into a paste and rub it into the stain. Then wash in the machine (add 1/2 cup of bicarb to the drum). I would have thought a hot wash would be best to be honest. And vinegar in the final rinse (instead of fabric softner - just put in the little tray where that usually goes - add when you put the machine on).

Let us know how you get on
