DS1 likes to ride his bike to School, School would rather he didn't?????

My DS1 has just started School and he likes to ride his bike. We live far enough away to merit this, makes the journey easier/more fun for him. I asked his teacher before he started what was the policy for bikes at School and she directed me to the office to ask, they showed me where his bike should go etc, nobody said it was a problem, a few children take their bikes it's not like DS1 is the only one.

Today however we were putting his bike away and we bumped into the Deputy Head/Early Years something or other (not 100% sure of her correct title but she has a lot to do with DS1's class). She said to me "We try to discourage them from bringing their bikes to School because we can't guarantee their safety" (I thought she meant the safety of the other children as DS1 careers through the playground which would have been a valid point but then she continued) "if anything happened to the bike while it was being stored on School premises, if it went missing or anything, we would be insured for it" to which I said "It's OK we wouldn't hold the School responsible if anything happened to his bike".

Am I alone in finding this really odd, I could take DS1 in the car to School, most days it is sitting at the door but I have chosen to walk and some days let him take his bike. The School has the facilities to store the bikes, in the designated area there are stands to put the bikes in. I would have thought the School would have been encouraging children to cycle to School.

Rant over!

Sorry that should read "we wouldn't be insured for it"!

I take it you don't live in Cambridge then?! Surely they just need to put a sign up stating that personal property is the responsibility of the individual? I thought most places tend to cover themselves like this.

Please don't be put off cycling - if you have your own insurance sorted then I assume it shouldn't be an issue for the school?

Not Cambridge!

I know I'm just been silly but I sort of felt a bit picked on, surely if it's a problem they would make it official, others are bringing bikes.

We have away from home insurance for our bikes so I agree it shouldn't be an issue for the School.

Thanks libb, I'll try not to let it put him/us off.

What a load of nonsense - no b* wonder they're complaining kids are too fat.
Think I would politely ignore the old bag for the moment and if it's mentioned again send a snooty letter to the head or the board of governors. Ridiculous. As someone else said a poster pointing out that they didn't accept liability for theft or damage should be adequate. (Although maybe there is a theft problem at the school and they're sick of the police 'visiting'?)
