FF - our garage floor is concrete and a friends company supplied the paint which is also some kind of sealant - it looks nice for a garage floor but not sure I'd want it in my house. Wouldn't recommend sanding it as it must surely throw up a lot of dust.

fairyfly · 15/09/2004 20:45

Could you tell me what the paint is called Jampot, not sure how you make it smooth if you can't sand it, thanks

We had our floor screeded with a self levelling compound. Don't know the name of the paint i'm afraid as his company makes it. Usually its used for commercial premises like garages, showrooms etc. If you paint a concrete floor with an element of damp the paint will lift too and it will look crap so its worth getting someone with a damp meter round. As essbee said some floor coverings are pretty good although laminate has to be laid on boards otherwise it looks shite.

oooh what about "painting" tiles on - natural stone effect which looks lovely. I'm sure paint can be had from B&Q etc or building supplies. and get your landlord to check the damp

FF i think you probably daub a couple of different shades on with a rag for that "random" effect and when its dry, paint on the grout lines. Maybe you could borrow a line marking machine from the local council

jampot · 15/09/2004 21:12

i think I saw it on changing rooms or one of those "house doing up shows"

fairyfly · 15/09/2004 21:20

Like that black and white chess floor that the woman burst into tears at, will be a miracle if i can make this look good

I did once and regretted it. It looked awful when it got scratched - but then I had a dog to scratch it with its claws!

fairyfly · 15/09/2004 21:41

Oooo debra how, what did it involve? how did you make it smooth etc

If you use thin masking tape and sponge several colours over the top (then remove) you should get limestone/granite/marble looking tiles with 'grey' grout. You can get floor paint for concrete in B&Q/Homebase etc

fairydust · 15/09/2004 23:00

wilko's sell there own make -then there's international that do one as well

susanmt · 16/09/2004 07:22

We painted our kitchen floor with International Garage floor paint cos when we moved in it was covered in a ghastly carpet that I vaxed 4 times and it was still coming out black!

The floor was a bit rough but with rugs it was OK. We were totally broke having just spent every penny on the house. \it lasted for 3 years, but was a bit hard on knees of trousers when dd1 was crawling!

fio2 · 16/09/2004 07:26

there was someone in a magazine who had painted the floor like a whitewashed grey and then painted italic words all over it, looked lovely. You would have to be quite artistic though I would have thought

SofiaAmes · 16/09/2004 21:55

fairyfly, there are stains for concrete that can look really good. They tend to be in the brown, rusts, tans. I think they might possibly sell them at B&Q. In my house in la, the guest house had a concrete floor with awful carpet and i didn't want to spend much money on it. I stained the concrete floor with a blue water based stain (applied on my hands and knees with a sponge) and then polyurethaned over that so it wouldn't wash away. It looked great! I had a series of tenants with dogs and it did get a little scratched, but it still looks good 8 years later. You can use area rugs for accent and to cover up and not so perfect bits.

iota · 20/09/2004 20:31

forwest/fairy fly - I think I have misled you on essbee's thread - we have concrete floors all covered up by carpet or vinyl downstairs and chipboard covered up by carpet or laminate floor upstairs

No concrete painting for us

NomDePlume · 20/09/2004 20:36

We painted ur garage floor with the same stuff, but it was expensive I think. It'd prob cost just as much to find a bargain decent 'roll end' piece of lino, look and feel a damn sight better too.
