DS aged 7 asked me this today as someone in his class told him its your mum that does it.

As he sad promise I felt like I couldn't lie and I told him the truth, then out came all the father xmas and easter bunny, then took it to another level and said is god real lol.

What ages were your children when they stopped believing.?

My daughter demanded teh truth about Father xmas when she was about 8. In January. Then in December kept telling me I'd "ruined" xams for her. Ho hum, she'll live.

meandmy · 24/07/2007 15:23

oh dear we were fobed off with im the helper as xxxxxxx very busy/ill tonight when we asked that q!

anorak · 24/07/2007 15:24

Why didn't you just promise and then get your partner to put the money under the pillow?

Porpoise · 24/07/2007 15:26

I find it helps always to say first, 'What do you think?'

If they're ready(ish) for the truth, they tend to say, 'I think it's you' or 'He isn't real, is he?'.

If they're not ready, they'll say, 'I don't know' or 'X says it but I don't believe him' or something like that.

I did exaclty the same thing to my Mum when I was 6. From then on I never let her forget that her honesty had ruined Christmas, Easter and every tooth loss day... Only now do I feel very sorry for my poor old Mum.

april74 · 24/07/2007 15:27

I did think about it, but he asked about the money that was put under his pillow in the last week, so I really felt like I couldn't lie and it snowballed lol.

I suppose its with all the talk about going to the new school and being a big boy etc etc.

ooh, how sad for you - my girls pestered and pestered me about the Easter bunny until I said 'okay no, it's not real- I hid the eggs"

They were a little shocked and disappointed and immediately asked "what about Father Christmas?" to which I replied indignantly "Of course he's real," and quickly left the room.

april74 · 24/07/2007 15:31

oh I did ask why he thought that and he said X at school said it and he knows everything, and he said if I still believe then i am a baby, We had a good talk and he will keep this new found information to himself and not ruin the "magic" for others.

lol hellish,

as soon as he realised tooth fairy wasn't real, a light switch came on in his head and he said that they are not real then. He had been puzzled why I only got him a few pressies when someone he hardly knows got him lots lol

Porpoise · 24/07/2007 15:34

well, you did the right thing then, april74.

According to Porpoise law, he was ready.

hellish · 24/07/2007 15:35

Fio, be careful - we once lost the tooth in the garden - left a note instead, and was dd delighted with a lovely reply

Only problem is that now, dd writes a note with every tooth - the last one included a picture and a request for a pic of tooth fairy.

april74 · 24/07/2007 17:07

I 100% do not feel guilty about lying now. I have had a big hug and he said thanks for all the lovely things that I did for him, he asked if I can still hide the chocolates and stuff at easter, I said of course I can.

I think he will be fine.

I've ruined it for my 7yo, last week I was out late and forgot about the tooth. Woke up at about 8am to hear dd1 (7) battering dd3 (3) back into bed saying "you can't get up or the tooth fairy won't come. I tried to pretend the tooth fairy would come if we all closed our eyes and thought fairy thought, etc, but dd1 was not convinced.

MaureenMLove · 24/07/2007 17:19

dd is 11 and we have yet to have the convo about father Xmas! I know she knows, but she's no fool! She thinks that if she admits to knowing she won't get a stocking! Smart cookie!
The tooth fairy was rumbled last year. She put a tooth under her pillow and in the morning found 50p and the tooth that I'd meant to put in the bin on my bedside table!
