When do you stop using a buggy??

I have ds 3 and dd 21 months and must admit to still using the double buggy an awful lot of the time. It's just so much easier to get from a to b with them both strapped in the buggy. What kind of distance should ds be walking now? How should I go about it? Most importantly how do I stop him from running off in shops without shouting and making a scene??? Any advice apreciated. I think it's about time to get rid of the double buggy.

2 and a half

Did you have a 2nd child in a buggy then?

My ds2 is three and to be honest I only take the buggy now if we are out for whole day as he can get tired towards the end, or if we are going on a picnic and then no-one sits in the buggy - it just carries all our stuff !!

We left the buggy at home when we went away this year in June and didn't miss it once.

Maybe a buggy board for a single buggy would be better. Then you can retain some control when you need to ?

My DD is 2y 1m, we do use the buggy if we're in town or something, but mostly it just lives in the boot of my car. If we are walking somewhere local - the park, to a friends house etc then we leave the buggy at home and she walks, I'd say that DD can comfortably handle a 10-15 minute walk. If she is tired etc then I will take the buggy, but she'll only go in it if she's really struggling on her feet.

I let ds1, nearly three and a half, get in DS2's three wheeler today and he looked like a giant. He usually hops in the Maclaren. Although I was B'd if I was going to carry him on the way back from the park, almost three stone. I don't know when I will have to patience to coax him in to dawdling back home after a good run in the park. A rod for my own back I know

I think three is well time to ditch the buggy if you can. My dd1 was three in February and now manages over half a mile, twice a day.

I agree with Kayleigh woodpops, get him on a buggy board, tell him it's a skateboard.

We stopped with ds1 when we had ds2, and he was only 2. But, he can sit on the front of the pushchair if he needs to (buggy board we were lent doesn't fit). It was probably a bit young, but he seemed OK, and I didn't want to buy a double buggy.

TBH, there's little point asking others what their child did/does as they all develop at different rates are some 3 year olds are not as confident or able on their feet for longer peiods as others. You know your DS, you know what he can comfortably cope with walking-wise, it's your call.

Do you/would you consider using reins ? That way you could put them on him and strap him into the buggy, but just slowly increase the amount of time he spends walking beside the buugy (with you holding the reins). Each trip to you, let him have another 5 or so mins of walking. When he asks to get in the buggy and you feel he can do a little more, perhaps distract him with something - a bird, a car etc etc ?

Apols for the typos

woodpops · 14/09/2004 15:26

I think he would walk fine. I've often gone out with him on his own and no buggy. My main concern is coping with him walking and a buggy.

I'm a firm believer in reins, it does help that my DD loves hers !

zubb · 14/09/2004 15:31

I make ds1 hold onto the buggy when we go out. If its busy I hold his hand while I push but the pushchair is light so its OK to do it one-handed. He has tried to run away a few times, and then the buggy gets left while I grab him, but he knows now that if he runs away we have to go straight home. This had to be done once when in the middle of something, but he learnt that it wasn't an idle threat, and hasn't done it since.

I'll see how brave I'm feeling on Friday, we may walk to toddlers.

yes ds1 walked forj 2 really ( well we used a double buggy twice) and ds2 walked form 2 andsd a half when ds3 wa born
ds3 now goes to school in my arms/ walking, he is 18 months

nikkim · 15/09/2004 01:13

My dd (3 this week) just walks so slow and she is a bit of a pampered princess (takes after her mother!) so we still use our buugy, infact I have just ordered a new one!

toddlerbob · 15/09/2004 06:18

Ds is 18 months and we only use a buggy if I'm walking to a friends a couple of miles away. If it's just out and about stuff we walk. I use reins and have a hip seat for if he gets tired. Older people think it's great. People my own age think I'm mean.
