To ask you, are you a side, back or front sleeper?

And if so, have you always been?

Okay, so to summarise, I get a lot of headaches, for which I take Topiramate & Amitriptyline daily/nightly for. I have, until recently always been a side sleeper. I did find I couldn't stay comfortable in one position for too long, as my back began to hurt, especially if I laid on it.

Around 9, 10 weeks ago, we changed our mattress, we actually changed it 3 times as we weren't happy but we've settled on the 3rd one. It's very soft, although its medium firm. Changed pillows too. I used to have 2, but now have 1 quite firm, but very full one. DH could actually sleep on a bed of nails, he could sleep on anything, anywhere, in any position.

So I found I was waking up with headache every morning, backache too. Swapping pillows about didn't really help. Couldn't change the mattress again. So one night I decided to lay on my back, instead of my usual side position. I must of drifted of that way. The following morning, I didn't feel as achey. The headache wasn't as bad. The next night I settled into my usual side position. I'd usually switch sides until I fell asleep. Woke up with headache, backache.

So last night, I settled laid on my back & this morning, I felt better for it. So how come after all the years, could it be I've been laying in the wrong position? Yet before (on our old matress) if I woke in the night because I was on my back, I was in pain?!

I think, maybe when I've slept on my side my shoulders are more 'hunched' up, straining my shoulder & neck muscles, where as laying flat, they could be more relaxed?

I'm front and side sleeper for some reason. The only time I'm aware I've gone onto my back is when I suddenly wake up, sit bolt upright, sweating profusely because of a bad dream or something! I've also had sleep paralysis on my back where I've woken up but can't move.
I don't think I've ever consciously gone to sleep on my back though.

I'm a side sleeper and also suffer massively with head and neck pain (along with a few others to be honest- chronic migraine and fibromyalgia).
I have the hardest time trying to find a pillow that's comfy and supportive enough for that.
I'm also a fidget so do spend some time sleeping other ways sometimes. Sadly haven't noticed any improvement in pain with other positions. But also may be because my back hurts too much on my back. But fingers crossed it works for you if you carry on doing it.
