I have worn glasses since about the age of 9 and I now wear contacts for playing hockey as I am a goalkeeper and it isn't easy wearing glasses under a helmet but as I was growing up I would wear glasses for sports.
If your dd can see without wearing them I would say take them off but if she does need them to see I would let her wear them.

Maybe a little neurotic

I've worn glasses for 30 years and have never had an accident with them. I've always worn them when I've exercised, and dd wears hers for PE. I've fallen a number of times wearing them but you don't tend to land on your face when you fall - you put your arms out to protect yourself. And at 9 I would have thought she would (probably) be less likely to fall flat on her face than a younger child.

Some people wear glasses during swimming, how does that work?

Kbear · 17/07/2007 10:33

I have worn glasses since I was 9 - was in hockey team, netball team, did athletes and swimming. No problems.

DD (10) has been hit in the face with a ball whilst wearing glasses. It hurt the glasses more than her face, I think, but it wasn't comfortable.

However, she does have contact lenses - mostly because she does judo and can't wear glasses for that. She wouldn't be able to see the instructor demonstrate moves without the glasses.

Some opticians aren't happy about contacts for kids; others are. DD only has 15 pairs of daily contacts a month and only wears for 2-4 hours at a time.

Dd1 has been wearing glasses since Reception. She has to do sport in her glasses, because without them she's a danger to herself and others. It's never been a problem.

The lenses aren't actually glass, they're plastic. You can pay to have extra toughened or scratch-resistant lenses, but tbh at that age the prescriptions change so frequently that I've never bothered. The frames do take a battering -- we've had several instances where dd1 has been hit in the face by a ball and come home with very lopsided glasses, but the opticians can fix most things. It is worth getting sprung frames, though.

FWIW I teach infants and always let them wear their glasses for PE. As someone else said, it's often more dangerous for them if they don't. No-one in any of my classes has ever had an accident though so I feel confident about doing it. ALso my ds (2.50 has worn glasses since 14months. He is incredibly long sighted and I wouodn't dream of asking him to take them off for sports. He hates being without them and becomes very unsure of himself.

If you need to wear glasses you need to wear them - they are not an optional fashion accessory. Surely teachers would not tell a child to remove their glasses for sport? How would they see? I can't see without mine.

lou33 · 17/07/2007 11:20

if she is long sighted she will need them for close work

ds2 has worn glasses since he was a year old and not had any accidents with htem, and he is now 6

she will need them in pe just as much as other lessons

fingerwoman · 17/07/2007 11:23

she'll be fine. dp wears glasses all the time, he has to wear them for sport because he just can't see otherwise.
had an interesting chat with optician about possible glass lenses recently and she was saying that you're pretty safe with the plastic ones (which your dd's will be- glass isn't common now) because they don't shatter like glass. so even if you fall on your face in all likelihood all that would happen is the lenses may come out or crack
