Ideas for voluntary work for me please

I would like to do voluntary work one day a week but really don't want to get emotionally involved as I know I will end up taking other people's worries home with me (ie Homestart).

I went into the museum today as they have volunteers but it's only tiny and rather dark so I don't think that's for me. I have also thought about a charity shop but I would love some ideas.

Don't mention school as I have already asked and they don't need/want me!

erm.... charity shop is what springs to mind I am afraid. alternatively hospital radio/hospital shop/tea bar?

Where do you live, shr? Lots of areas have Volunteer Bureaux which match volunteers with appropriate agencies. The national site for England is here and looks useful. You can search for your local office on the home page. If you're outside England perhaps there is a similar organisation that could help? Good luck with your volunteering- it can be v rewarding, IME.

What about things like being a volunteer in an old property - national trust or local authority could be good starting point; or in a garden/countryside project? Aren't there registers of voluntary organisations? Sure someone will know if I just made that up...

How wonderfully charitable of you to actively seek unpaid work. How about contacting a local charity to see if they help with administrative tasks or errands. My other suggestion is also a charity shop I am afraid.

What about working with SN children. I know our local Portage service take volunteers, but I don't know what sort of commitment they want. They offer a weekly get together for parents/carers and their pre-school children with special needs. Even general help, like making the drinks would be appreciated if you are worried of getting too involved.
Otherwise, still with children, what about any local mother & toddler groups?

there is an organic farm near me that offers a large bag of produce for a days 'voluntary'work
which seems worthwhile imo-all that fresh air would be goooood
i can only think of charity shop or teaching
adult literacy hth

gothicmama · 11/09/2004 20:15

why not try this for lots of different volunteering opportunities

Just remembered my dad drives for a charity - ferries old people around to hospital appointments etc. Could maybe find out from hospital if they have contacts with such a charity. He's reimbursed for mileage by the way.

I like the sound of the organic farm work..don't have any time to do anything like this really- not until dd goes nursery anyway.
Loads of ideas now!!

you could come and look after my family for a day a week if you like

Thanks everyone, I have been on-line and registered my details. There is an advert for someone to train to give children 1st aid advice, going to schools etc. Think this would be 'right up my street'. Will let you know how I get on.
