Dancing/music activity for a boy, how do I find such a thing?

Our local paper ran an ad for dancing classes for young children, as ds (just 5) loves dancing and music at home I thought we'd try it.

So this morning we trooped of to the church hall. 3 teenage girls seemed to be running it (not what I was told by the very organised lady I spoke to on the phone earlier this week). They were playing disco music VERY LOUDLY, and teaching about 15 little girls in sparkly shoes very detailed steps for a routine. We stayed for about 25 mins, watching these kids get ordered about. DS had no intention of getting involved (I'm not surprised), but this wasn't what I expected.

I want to find some sort of "music and movement" type of activity that ds will find fun and give him exercise, perhaps with short bursts of structured learning involved. Does such a thing exist? How do I find it?

Is there YMCA near you? They do those sort of classes at my one.

Look for gymnastics type dance routines, or just gymnastics class -- they seem to have more boys than the ballet/tap type classes.

Where are you. I know Stagecoach in some areas only take children from 6. Where I am there are other drama clubs which do "street dance" in with the singing, acting etc.

Some of the dance teaching associations are
Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance
Allied Dance Association
IDTA
If you google them their website should have details of teachers in you area.

Yellow pages should also have info of dance schools etc
Our local drama class is Dragons (& Little Dragons)
Good luck It's very important that boys learn to dance

The Stagecoach website is www.stagecoach.co.uk but there is a problem with it at the moment, its been offline for a few days. If you call Head Office on 01932 254333 they will put you in touch with your local school.

The Main School classes which are for children aged 6-16 last 3 hours but many schools do an Early Stages where they can start from age 4. There do seem to be a higher proprtion of boys than you often get at dance schools. Also the staff are all qualified and are inspected at least once or twice a year and unlike OFSTED there is no warning when the inspectors are going to turn up.

Easy aren't you near/in Derby?

My DS1 (5) is about to start a Saturday morning class at Derby Dance Centre in Chapel Street which is definitely not tap shoes and pink tutus, as far as I can gather music and movement etc. Am hoping he will enjoy it!

He loves pretend play and dressing up, but understandably, like yr DS, was not keen on the ballet classes in the local church hall here (I'm sure they're good, in fact plan to send DD, but a bit sparse on boys).

TRy new perspectives at Mansfield Arts centre? Derby theatre? Stagecoach? Nottingham playhouse Roundabout Company? if they don't run classes themselves, they may know who does.

Yes BTW I am in nottingham and happy to travel for the right activity

Easy updating this

DS did dance class today, wanted me to stay at first but then changed his mind, in the end tonight said it was his fave thing all day and I think he meant it, not just saying that.

The did spinning like a spinning top, to music, working with partner, sounded quite good. There were a couple of girls there he knew which helped, but other boys too.
