good lord! a month? my hat off to you. we live in a flat & don't have that kind of space. however, mil & fil came to stay for a week once & i thought they'd drive me mad.

Budababe · 15/07/2007 07:46

A month! Surprised you are still sane.

Would never inflict myself on anyone for that length of time.

meowmix · 15/07/2007 08:07

are these the ones who are veggie and difficult with food or is that someone else?

a month is above and beyond the call of duty.

Meowmix, it is the same.

But they have maids at home, and the woman in particular is driving me nuts, being thoroughly spoilt and not used to do anything at all.

She was standing next to my youngest, by the front door, when suddenly she started giggling, oh, he just posted all your letters out again, ha ha ha ha, and then she went in to kitchen to pour herself a cup of tea!! Couldnt she just either a) stop him, or b) take the letters in again as she was standing there? No, I had to stop in the middle of doing something to go out and get them.

MOAN!

oh dear. Maybe you should have your "maids day off".

Its shocking how people behave when they're used to maids - one of the expat families here tells what they call an amusing story of their DD (2ish) playing with her teaset and offering her dolls tea etc and then turning round and bellowing for the maid to come and pour it for her.

Har har.... eh? where'd she learn that then?!

StarryStarryNight · 15/07/2007 22:45

oh dear....

Meowmix, you mention expats, where are you?

Middle East - Qatar to be specific (thumb shaped bit above Dubai and below Bahrain opposite Iran)

kneazlechick · 17/07/2007 11:51

A similar maid-related story from when I lived in Hong Kong -

Friends of the family thought, briefly, that it was funny that their daughter's first few words were in Filipino. It didn't take long before they realised that they should maybe be spending a bit more time with her rather than palming her off on the maid!

You are very brave to have house-guests for so long. Was it planned this way or have they extended since they arrived?

My parents have just left after spending a month with us. (They are waiting for the paperwork to go through on their new house). It was way longer than I can easily cope with. DH has hardly moaned. He is a star!

However, he's just rung to say his mother is coming on Thursday for the weekend. I feel like I want to scream but can't really say no cos he's just survived my lot

Isnt it amazing how guests come in heaps?

I was just told that my husbands cousin and his girlfriend is back from New York for a month and need somewhere to stay, and of course they cannot stay home with parents, because younger brother is there, and they dont get on. Naturally older brother will not want to share room with his girlfriend and younger brother.... So who did aunty call? My husband of course.... And what did he say? "Yes" - and they arrive the day before my existing guest leave.... This is not happening. This is not happening. Luckily we are off on holiday soon, we will just leave them the keys and say have fun, and dont forget to feed the fish...

Meowmix, I know where Quatar is, LOL. It is on my list of countries to visit. I have forgotten why, the list is pretty old. (pre kids) Have been to Dubai, Jordan, Egypt, want to go to Syria and Iran. (Archaelogical interest in those two countries). How do you like living in Quatar?

You WANT to visit Qatar? blimey thats a first, its not that exciting a place! Syria, Iran and Oman are on my list for visits, Bahrain is lovely too. Qatar is still a bit of a building site, extremely flat, not much old culture at all. We have an inland sea and singing sand dunes though. So maybe that was the draw? And its a good place to get a sense of what Saudi might be like without going to Saudi.

But I enjoy it. I love the surreal and this place does surreal very well indeed.

StarryStarryNight · 20/07/2007 12:33

Ummm. Yes, now I am not so sure, it does not sound so tempting. I remember vividly somebody talking about the sand dunes in Quatar and how moonlike it was, and nearly like in the film "Dune". Must say, have been to Dubai and other deserts since (camping in Egyps Western Desert, I was in layers of sunlotion, sand and mosquito repellent, never missed a shower more), so perhaps I can take the sand dunes of Quatar off my wish list, LOL!
