Oooooh. [head spin]
SO many toys and games and books in shops.
Little people vs lego duplo vs megablocks vs train set vs farm yard set vs realisation that he is not quite old enough to be into that sort of game yet vs realisation that he may be old enough soon.

Ds is 2 in a couple of weeks or so. Can anyone help me?

Ummm I had the same problem finding a present for my DS (2 next week).

We have decided on one of those pop up tent combos with the tunnel etc in the end as it can be used in the house or garden.

We did buy him a wooden car park/garage for his little cars at christmas which he LOVES playing with now.

Tigana · 12/07/2007 14:03

DS had a wooden garage for christmas too...and he doesn't really seem that keen on it. Likes to climb on it but hasn't quite mastered imaginative play yet...

Have to admit the car park has only recently become a favourite - was previously only used as a step to look out of window

What about garden toys, e.g. slide, playhouse, sandpit or similar?

IdrisTheDragon · 12/07/2007 14:38

DS got a basic train track (like Brio but from Tesco) for Christmas when he was just over 2 and it has been a firm favourite ever since - he's 3.7 now).

DD (22 months) has been enjoying it for a while as well .

jackie2kids · 12/07/2007 14:40

The red little tikes car (the one that you sit in that everyone has).

USAUKMum · 12/07/2007 14:57

DS has played non-stop with his train set (now various brands, brio, tesco, ELC) since he was about 2. So for his 3rd in 2 weeks he has asked for: an engine shed, a Harvey (one of Thomas's friends), a breakdown train, and that green building (a PLAN railstation that doting grandparents have got). This list hasn't changed in 3 mths ! So I highly recommend them.

Washersaurus · 12/07/2007 15:05

I agree with the train set idea - DS plays with his trains lots (ikea, thomas etc) - he's not so much in to the track at the moment, but a wooden set is something that can be added to every birthday/xmas.

Tigana · 12/07/2007 15:34

Are all the train sets inter-changeable then? I expected them to be nasty, corporate types whereby Tesco tracks won't work with an ELC train and you can't connect a Brio cornerpiece to a Thomas straight etc...

OP posts:
Washersaurus · 12/07/2007 15:56

I think most of them are interchangeable (def ELC, brio and thomas) - the ikea track takes a bit of force to attach to the thomas track I've found, but they do sort of fit

bagpuss · 12/07/2007 16:02

Thomas the Tank Engine Duplo. ds2 was 2 last week and we aren't allowed to clear it away ever. He plays with it all day.

LittleLupin · 12/07/2007 16:03

I just bought my friend's DS a toy Henry Hoover for his 2nd birthday. It really works! He's obsessed with the big version (good lad )

suzycreamcheese · 12/07/2007 16:07

tigana
our brio doesnt interchange with thomas (he's blue plastic) i told everyone he had brio and they complied! lots of interesting bits and peices...engines, announcer / train noise station...zoo set..

its very good, well i play with it at least!

am sure he will have great day anyhow! it'll be the paper he likes ripping and the cheapest plastic toy he loves you know how it goes...

have fun choosing!

My DS2 (2 next month) absolutely adores everything trains and Thomas - he can play quite happily for some time with them. We have all the gear from DS1, who played with it for years - a combination of Brio, ELC and some other Brio-compatible track. I'm thinking of getting DS2 a nice wooden garage for his birthday (the only one we have now is not very good), as he also enjoys playing with the many cars we have. I also agree with the pop-up tunnel recommendation.

Tigana · 12/07/2007 16:30

Right - will be browsing train-related toys.
Had forgotten I wanted to get ds a hoover! He is also obsessed with our Henry!

Hi Tigana

DS was two a couple of weeks ago. The present he likes best the train set as per all of the other posts!

He has some tesco, some ELC and some dodgy stuff off ebay (is very wierd) and it all fits together. I am expecting years of fun as you can add extra bits as you go - that is what I would recommend.

I bought him the red little tikes car that someone else suggested - he was delighted when he saw it and sits in it but is not using it that much althought that could be as we live in a tiny one bed flat and there is no where to drive to......

Have fun and I hope your DS has a lovely birthday!

USAUKMum · 12/07/2007 20:02

we have tesco, sainsbury, brio, elc, ikea and ebay track stuff and it all fits great (though some of the curved ikea doesn't fit as nice with the brio curves, but just use another type

As I said, our set never gets put away. I recently bough a 156 pieces on ebay for £56, including tunnels, 4 bridges and DS was over the moon!

He also has some of the new brio network stuff (metaphor for computers) that interconnects with everything else as well and is really neat. Next will have to see if our road system bought at sainsbury sale last month integrates in with the rail system will let you know after DS birthday if you'd like
