Eating out in Edinburgh with kids - Where can you go?

Just returned from a 2 day trip to Edinburgh with a friend and her dd so there were 2 adults and 5 children ranging from 8-15 yrs.
After traipsing round for hours seeing the sights decided to go somewhere nice for our evening meal. I was disappointed to find that we could only go to Pizza Hut, Burgerking or McaDonald's for something to eat. All the places we went to ( in Rosie Street area) would not allow children under 14 years.
If I go back again, can anyone recommend somewhere nice, near the castle etc., that welcomes children and doesn't cost the earth?
ps. couldn't meet up with mumsnetters this time because I had to be back to work today. Hope you had a good time

Dear Mears
There's a couple of places I'd recommend

  • Banns Vege Cafe (much more stylish than it sounds) nr the Tron Filling Station on Royal Mile (burgers, texmex & pasta in fun themed restaurant) The Hub (converted church right by castle - very trendy) Mammas pizza in the Grassmarket & family style Italian restaurant on Cockburn St who's name escapes me for the moment.

Mammas, Filling Station & Cockburn St restaurant are most reasonably priced of these though eating out in Edinburgh isn't the cheapest, especially during the Festival.

If you come up/down here regularly can I suggest a good book called "Edinburgh for the Under Fives"? I know that the children in your party are older than that, but it's full of info on family friendly places much of which can be extended to older kids. Costs under £6.

Oopps, one more if you do like Pizza - PizzaExpress on North Bridge (also ones in West End & Stockbridge)is very stylish and has been known to set up adjacent adult's & children's tables if you/your friend and the youngsters want to have a moment of your own time. I've seen a number of birthday parties for children in their early teens set up this way at the Stockbridge one.

Mears - if you're still checking this page... try a search with the key word "Edinburgh" - there's a couple of previous threads on this subject with some good recommendations.
