*What do you think about similar names for brothers?*

Help! Name registration is Thursday and we're not quite there yet...
DS1's name is Ewan,DH and I both love it. We both also love the name Owen. DH thinks it could be nice for them to have similar names, I'm a bit worried they'd get confused by other people/not feel individual enough etc etc.
Alternative for DS2 is James (Jamie)
Anyone got any thoughts or know people in this situation?!

i think it would be weird, esp. as theya re basically the same name.

tissy · 09/07/2007 08:46

agree, a bit too similar

now if you had two names that started with the same letter, you'd save a fortune on name tapes for school...

JeremyVile · 09/07/2007 08:48

....and you would have to change James' name to Iwan so he wouldn't feel left out and unloved.....

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/07/2007 08:48

Well, I'd look at it from a point of view that if you were having to shout a name out because of a potential danger - would either know which you were referring to?

But, tbh, i dont think it matters that much.

As an aside, how can you not have decided already?

Anna8888 · 09/07/2007 08:49

I think siblings need differentiated names.

My partner's cousins are called Charles and Caroline - basically the same names in male and female. Now they are in their forties it sounds really silly...

I have a friend who has called her children Héloïse and Louis - also a bit too similar IMO.

MamaG · 09/07/2007 08:49

I think too similar too, sorry.

DD's name is very similar to her (male) cousin and when one of them is called, they both look up with a "yes?"

JeremyVile · 09/07/2007 08:51

Retract, retract!!

I misread the bit about James, thought he was another Son

Please ignore my previous thread.

I personally think it would just be wierd for brothers to each have a variation of the same name.

SofiaAmes · 09/07/2007 08:53

Odd for them and could prove difficult for you as you yell out one child's name and the other comes running.

purplemania · 09/07/2007 09:11

Thanks guys - think it's Jamie then, don't know why we've had a hard time deciding on names this time...probably me having a 2 week infection after having DS2 and not having time to talk sanely to DH! You're right about the calling out thing - think DH thinks it'd be nice for brotherly bonding - I think it could be the opposite!

I agree with the majority. I have got a Hannah and a Harry and i am always calling out the wrong name!

And I was stupid enough to put hannah's full name in her name tags so cant re-use them for Harry!

Think James is a lovely name, btw.

lilolilmanchester · 09/07/2007 11:34

How about James, with Owen as middle name? It probably won't matter when they are older, but while they are little the names are too easily confused which I think would drive both you and them nuts.

fannyannie · 09/07/2007 11:40

well I've got a Tafara, Tongai and Takunda......although I suppose they're at least different "sounding" names so not too confusing when I shout a name out - I do think that Owen/Ewan are too similar sounding though.....

thehairybabysmum · 09/07/2007 11:48

Im having this same dilemma with curent DS callum and i like cameron for current bump (if it's a boy), but also think they might be too similar.

Jamie is a lovely name i think.

purplemania · 09/07/2007 12:59

Hi hairybabysmum...think callum and cameron are similar to my dilemma - it's probably just because if you like one name a lot, then you automatically like similar sounding names. The bigger issue I think with the callum cameron thing is the initial - in a few years there'll be letters arriving for Mr C * and could at best be annoying, at worst embarassing for them?

I'd avoid same initials. I've got same initial, well, same name actually as my mum and it was very annoying getting mail mixed up, embarrassing sometimes too. Dh has same initial as his dad and even now they have occasional problems and they don't even live in the same country!

expeLYRAmus · 12/07/2007 12:13

My friend's girls are called Lola and Lois. Very similar and I keep calling them the wrong name.

Tutter · 12/07/2007 12:14

I believe ewan is a variant of owen

so they would, in essence, have the same name, which would be a bit odd imo

i used to go out with an ian john - equally strange...

Blu · 12/07/2007 12:20

'ewan and owen' is a real mouthful to say. Like an actors warm-up excercise. Say it a few times to yourself and to your DH...because you will be saying their names together a lot, calling them, telling poeple about them, etc.

And there will be confusion at school, Drs etc etc.

Choose James.

Tutter · 12/07/2007 12:21

ps agree that james a lovely name

TaylorsMummy · 12/07/2007 14:23

ewan and owen not good imo.

purplemania · 13/07/2007 18:42

Thanks guys - we've gone for James
