Is anyone else distressed by the two little Afghan children who were detained whilst visiting their parents in an asylum seeker detention centre? It was bad enough when the police stormed the mosque where the parents were hiding and arrested them, but to hold the children in what is a prison in all but name makes me ashamed of what this country has come to. Surely we can share what we have? And treat people like human beings?

Also they speak pretty good English, and I doubt they speak German. I'd rather live in a country where I spoke the language. They sounded educated, family-oriented people who already have friends here people and would almost certainly benefit our country, I would have thought.

In yesterday's Guardian there was an interview with the family and one of the girls said "I think we're here because we're half German" - I didn't think there was any reason to think that Germany would deport them.

Anyway I think the real issue here is that the US should not be bombing wedding parties in Afghanistan and then just shrugging it off. I have very big reservations about them bombing anywhere as it's so inaccurate anyway. This family was lucky in many ways, but what about the millions of Afghans who cannot afford to make the trip to Europe? Surely we should be concentrating our efforts on them?

The High Court ruled yesterday that The Home Secretary acted unlawfully by deporting this family. Further details here if anyone wants to know more.

www, it's awful, isn't it? and even though the deportation was unlawful, they're not allowed to come back! ashamed is right.
