DH and I have a house, on an interestonly mortgage. I want to leave him, but I'm worried where this will leave me and my children.

We both work, neither of us could afford the mortgage individually.

Would the council give me a house on the basis I will become homeless? How does it work?

you can go on a list.

If you were to leave you may have stay in a hostel until a property becomes available.

The other option is saving for a deposit on a private rental and the DSS paying it for you once you pay the initial deposit, until you get a council house.

You may have ring round local agents or look in your local papers all the free newspapers and local weekly ones etc.

MaccaMacca · 08/07/2007 16:25

It also depends on your income and if the rent is a little higher ie.really nice house you may have to pay an amount each week towards to rent.

You need to call your Council tomorrow and some local estate agents.

adtrader?

suezee · 08/07/2007 16:30

yeah all the local papers should have a houses to let page, if money is the issue i would try to find a house to rent that isnt owned by a big estate agents, the rent and bonds so tend to be a tad more expensive, you will be entitled to help off the council.they could even help you with the bond if you didnt have the money for one

suezee · 08/07/2007 16:32

the dss wont ask for repayments off you, they will pay for the majority of your rent , maybe all of it depending on your circumstances.

I don't think you should do anything without taking legal advice. There may be a way you can stay in the house. Good luck.

suezee · 08/07/2007 16:58

yeah there may even me a way that you can get the council to help you pay with the mortgage(dont hold me to that one) the best thing to do would be just to tell the cab advisor the situation

aloha · 08/07/2007 17:02

A friend of mine, single parent, no father around, had her mortgage interest paid as part of her benefits. Go and see the CAB, and don't move out.

suezee · 08/07/2007 17:08

yeah alohas right if there is a chance that you can get help towards the mortgage then dont go anywhere,if the children are staying with you then he has to move out and he cant make you give the house up and sell until the children have left home.
