Contents insurance - What are you covered for and how do you assess it?

I ahve just been helping my mum out with her insurances - saved her £50 on her car insurance which made her day, and then she asked me to do the same for her home insurance (on confused.com)

I had NO idea about contents so just suggested we put a large amount to be safe than sorry and most of the insurers refused a quote because of the contents amount (I said 100k)

Is that too much? Too little? I'm now effectively locked out of Confused as it's not letting me amend the main details to re submit for quotes.

So, I'm going to try and not get locked out of moneysupermarket. Any ideas how much for contents?

Depends on how big her house is and where in the country she lives. I live in South Yorkshire and have a 3 bed semi. Our contents is set at 50K. Don't forget to include all carpets, curtains, furniture, photos, fridges/freezers & contents, etc.

Ha! Guess what - she lives in South Yorks in a 3 bed semi too. So, that's a good marker for sure - thanks!

I think morethan does £75k as standard as it assumes it is SOOO much it would be enough cover for pretty much any normal person

I renewed my home insurance yesturday with halifax and got unlimited new for old cover!

and a huge bargain of £40 less then my 2nd lowest quote (from the AA) AND £100+ saving on other quotes from other conventional insurers.

(also £60 less than my renewel premium and the premium is fixed for 3 years and i can pay monthly by direct debit at no extra cost)

Thanks for that Nannyl - I'll have a look at them too then

I have direct line - unlimited contents, pay £26 a month, south east, 3 bed detached in town centre

It depends on her contents! Bear in mind expensive jewellery as generally anything worth over £1000 you will be charged extra for. It will also ask you if you have any item of furniture that is over the price of £XXXX (thousands of pounds) varies from company to company.
