Adult teeth and brass instruments?

I know we've been over this before, but could someone please remind me what the deal is with adult teeth and brass instruments.

DS1 is 7, and has a mixture of teeth! He has 2 adult front top teeth, and the first teeth either side missing. At the bottom he has 2 adult teeth, and two wobbly ones.

Is he too young to start a brass instrument? Even the cornet?

Now he has his front teeth I think it will be OK, roisin...it depends if he's going to need orthodontics or not, and if his mouth fits the instrument he wants to play.

DS2 started cornet when he was 7 or 8 and was fine for a short time, but the teacher said his mouth (embouchure?) was too big for it so he switched to tenor horn. His mouth fitted that but it wasn't what he wanted to play, which is really sad; because he needs orthodontic treatment woodwind was not possible, but I think if he was happy with the horn he could have continued.

As it was he switched to cello and was doing OK, but never practised, and we had a row and he gave up...

Oh that's a shame Janh: I love cello and tenor horn too for that matter.

Tbh I don't know what I think about ds1 and music. Dh and I are both musical, and so far it doesn't seem to have rubbed off! And I'm not sure he would be committed enough to practise, BUT he can do it at school, it gets him out of the playground for half an hour one lunchtime!
