Ebay - do you every wonder/worry where the stuff's coming from?

Last week I bought some audio tapes off ebay for ds1: seamless transactions, the goods have arrived and most are shrink-wrapped and price stickered with prices 6-10 times what I paid for them.

The vendor has large quantities of audio tapes for sale. Is there a possible innocent explanation?

Dh thinks it may be immoral to buy such items.

What do you think?

some people run businesses and sell whole sale stuff on there. my mum's cousin has thousands of rare comic books in his house that he sells on there. he even has to lock that room off so his ds and his friends dont go looking through them. i usually look through peoples feedback to see what they have sold in the past and what people have said about the transactions.

My friend has had exactly the same thought when she bought some kids audio tapes last week, but what do you do???

millipede · 06/09/2004 20:45

My friend had his house broken into, and thought that he would never see the stuff again - but the police found it on ebay! Apparently they trawl ebay regularly as it is a perfect way to sell on stolen goods and launder cash. Beware!

Oh great, thanks for the reassurance ... not!

This guy has been trading on ebay for over 4 yrs (I didn't even know it had been going that long), is powerseller, and has great feedback rating. It's just I cannot think of any logical and legitimate explanation for his prices to salve my conscience.

a lot of people put a low start bid to try and attract people to bid a lot on their item. I had a top that I paid just under £20 for, auctioned it with a start price of £5 and ended up getting £60 for it! If he's a power seller then I wouldnt worry so much, as he's probably not too fussed about what he gets for it, plus once a bid is ended you cant cancel it just because you didnt like the winner's bid. I sold a 'The Others' DVD which I never opened, and it was still in its shrink wrap and its price on. I paid about £15 for it, and got £5 for it including postage and packaging. I didnt take it out, as it just shows that Ive never used it. But not all ebay sellers are trustworthy. Ive come across a couple of them who just took my money and I got nothing.

I wouldn't worry too much when it comes to things like kids' tapes. He probably has a wholesaler contact he got through the Trader mag. They are probably liquidated stock, or surplus stock. It's the big electrical items that ask you to pay by western union that you have to worry about!

toddlerbob · 06/09/2004 21:34

I use the NZ equivalent to sell unwanted gifts, and also the odd thing that I see on sale so cheap I have to buy it, and then realise I don't need it and sell it on. Sometimes I get my money back and other times I make more than twice what I paid. I agree that if they still have the stickers they are probably liquidated stock. Rest assured he will still be making money overall.

I bought a load of kids tapes from ebay & had the same thoughts as you (I think I got over £100 for £10.50!)
The person that I got them from mailed me recently & said that he had a load more 4 sale if I was interested! It's probably the same bloke!!!!

JuniperDewdrop · 06/09/2004 21:39

I've often wondered but like millipede said the police look on ebay. If your guy wasn't legit I'm sure he'd have been rumbled by now.

roisin · 06/09/2004 22:32

Oh thanks that's better. I feel justified now in bidding for some more stuff from him.
