I am going to make all mumsnetters fume but my daughter was picked up a few times in my husbands van just on her booster seat when she was about 2-3ish. Also if i have had to get a taxi they have sometimes just been strapped, not through choice though.

I cant see why she cant buy one of those cheap booster car seats from mothercare, they are only about 27 quid and are 'safe' from 9 months, then her 4 yr old could have the booster. i take it your son would have a booster too? it is not that much hassle is it?

makes it really awkward for you to say anything though. Would me anyhow

Twig

You can force him to sit in what you like in your car.

DD1 has a friend who a) sits in the front seat and b) when they were younger - used to sit without a booster/carseat.

In MY car, I made her sit in the back and sat on appropriate seats. She used to kick up a fuss about not sitting in the front - but TOUGH! In my car - what I say goes.

I would do as Coddy suggests and buy a "reserve" booster seat that can be easily moved from car to car.

Tissy · 06/09/2004 17:36

I'm sure it is illegal for a 4 year old to sit in the front of a car "without appropriate restraint"-I'll look for the link.

I'm afraid, although this other woman is well meaning, I wouldn't let my child travel with her unless she agrees to make him use at least a booster, and I wouldn't take her child unless she (and the child) agree that proper restraints are used- you could end up with her kid throwing a paddy because you've made him sit in the back with a seatbelt properly applied.

Tricky one, I agree.

here is the Law about seatbelts and children.

It would appear that it is legal for a 4 year old child to sit in the front seat of a car, but if he doesn't use the diagonal part of the seat belt, he is a risk of serious injury in a crash .

Slinky · 06/09/2004 17:44

It's not just the seatbelt part, Tissy - activated airbags can cause horrific injuries to children sitting in the front.
