the grading system has been scrapped (Agenda for Change)

but

d grade is newly qualified, e grade next up, f grade is a junior sister/charge nurse, g grade ward sister, h grade ward manager

level 5 is the new name for registered staff nurse

Banding is now 1-8d with 1 being the lowest. Band 5 is what a staff nurse starts on.E grade is an experienced staff nurse who is now a senior band 5. Band 6 is F which is junior sister level, band 7 is ward sister and some nurse specialist posts. Band 8 and above are matrons, associate directors and nurse consultatants. HTH

I'm just a bit confused, my sister has been a nurse for around 15 years and I thought she was really "high up" but apparantly she's grade E level 1...?

just because she has been nursing for ages doesnt mean she is 'high up'

to get a job as an f grade or higher you have to apply for the job and be interviewed etc, you dont get automatic promotion

an e grade can still be left in charge of the ward on certain shifts, depending on what kind of ward it is. like a general geriatric or ent ward, say, but not hdu or itu or similar. they always have at least an f grade
