Bought a camcorder for our hols on friday and we used it for 10 mins.....then the screen went funny and it filmed with black lines on it. Anyway, took it back to Curry's today and got a snotty staff member who said it was a faulty tape. My husband said that he tried different ones, etc and they all did the same. So chap said we would need to get it sent away to see if it was faulty. We refused this as we are going away in 5 days ad want a working camera with us. All we wanted was a replacement....but when the deputy manager came over, he refused a new camera, refused to give us our money back and got rather shirty towards us.

Eventually, after a lot of arguing with manager, he offered us a new camera. We asked about if this problem happens again (in case it was a faulty batch) can we get our money back, and manager still said no!!! we would have to get it repaired. What a cheek!!!

At this point, I argued with manager and told him that their policy was absurd, we paid £400 for this camcorder, and would not keep it if it was broken. So we eventually got our money back.

Then we went to PC world next door to Curry's and asked them about their policy over taking stuff back faulty. They told us that if an item was faulty, they will change it no quibble!!! Yet, Currys and PC world apparently have the same policy!!! I will not buy anything else from currys now as we would be stuck with an item forever!!!

I feel better now after my rant!!

I'm not surprised you were angry. If an item is faulty or not fit for the purpose it is sold for,you have a right to your money back by law. (I thought Curry's & PC World were part of the same group).

I'd ring trading standards & report them.

JanH · 05/09/2004 18:27

Agree with Mirage, report them to Trading Standards, they were wrongwrongwrong!

I would also try to get in touch with Currys Head Office and tell them:

a) which branch and what was said
b) that you are going (or have been) to Trading Standards
c) that you may well contact Which? magazine and/or newspaper consumer advice columns.

(I know you are going on holiday but it won't half concentrate their minds - you may even get a token of compensation!)

Yes I agree, if it's faulty you can decide to have your money back, a replacement or a repair. It's the law! Quote them the sale of goods act.

ooooh I've just had this exact same arguement with comet.

We bought a video recorder- took it home- set it up- every time I used the remote the TV switched itself off, then it chewed up 2 tapes. Took it back less than 2 weeks after purchase and asked for an exchange but because it didn;t demonstrate the fault (ie it didn;t chew up the tapes, or turn their tv off) was told I needed an engineer to visit. This was back in July just as summer holidays were starting - I refused saying that my autistic son would go ape if someone started fiddling with the video (he would- he'd put his head through the window). So they said I could leave it with them to send away- I said that wouldn't demonstrate the TV turning off problem.

Anyway several letters of complaint to Head Office later they have now agreed to exchange the video. Am planning to take it back tomorrow.

Jimjams · 05/09/2004 18:59

It is the law- but apparently under the law they have the right to inspect the item to satisfy themselves that it is faulty. Tjat was my worry with the TV- that they would say my TV was faulty - even though it worked perfectly OK for years with our other video.

we're never buying from curry's again either! earlier this year, dh went in to ask about a washing machine. they didn't have the specific one in, so dh asked if they could check at other brances for them. the guy he spoke to said, "no, it would be easier for you to do that." dh was shocked and said, surely they had all the other brances numbers and would they please telephone the next nearest store and enquire". again he said, "no, we don't do that, you'll have to do that". so dh asked for the manager. he came and dh told him what the guy had said. the manager's response was "well, yes, he is right. you'll have to do that". so dh promptly told him that this stunk, that he was prepared to purchase a washing machine from them, and that they had lost a sale and a customer for life. the manager practically laughed.

dh went next door to powerhouse, where he relayed the story, saw the very w/m on a top shelf, paid for it and 2 women got it down for him and pushed it out to the car! wouldn't accept any help and said that people were often coming in their shop following a similar fall-out with curry's next door!

currys and PC world are part of the same chain so it is mad that they treated you so differently. Ihave had bad experiences with currys too. This will explain why financially currys are in trouble and why they are laying a lot of people off.

2wildbabies · 06/09/2004 10:48

It seems to be so hard to get a shop to do what the customer wants these days. I am gonna write a letter of complaint to Currys but personally I think it will be a waste of time.

I'm moving to America later this year so I hope the service there is far better.
