Confiscated items at airports ......

I have just had a bottle of shampoo, a rather expensive tube of hair conditioner and a bottle of gel hair spray confiscated at Zurich airport, the reason given - they're 'too big' - meaning I was only entitled to 100ml bottles, mine were 250ml.

Now don't get me wrong, I think it's great that we're being more vigilant at airports but I have two questions ....

  1. what happens to all the confiscated stuff, bearing in mind some of it is full bottles of alcohol. Is it just wastefully tossed or wot?

  2. if I'd had two bottles of 100ml shampoo would that have been allowed and if so, doesn't that rather make a mockery of the system?

(and of course I know next time not to be so dopey and either buy smaller bottles or put it in my suitcase and not my hand luggage)

I'd like to know what happens to these bottles too.... perhaps some MNer works at an airport and can tell us.

  1. No idea
2. Yes, provided they fitted into a clear ziplock bag.

Can I hijack this thread and ask where I can find the new rules. I haven't flown since 2002 and I know loads of things have changed. Thanks

JoolsToo · 25/06/2007 12:03

how is it reasonable to allow 2 100ml bottles but not one 250ml?

I think they go to homeless shelters

JoolsToo · 25/06/2007 12:22

the other problem we encountered was when we returned from Jamaica earlier this year dh bought a bottle of rum at Kingston airport. We were flying to Manchester via Heathrow.

At Heathrow they wanted to take the rum of dh which he was loathe to do so we had to go back to baggage check in and check in the hand luggage complete with bottle of rum!

At Zurich they seal the bag containing any liquid you buy from duty free but obviously they didn't at Jamaica.

It's the inconsistency that's irritating.

I doubt if they go to homeless shelers TBh what if there was something wrong with them the airline who donated them would have to except responsibility

but I may be wrong and I hope hey do get given to someone who needs them

CayKon · 25/06/2007 12:39

they probably go to auctions along with lost and found , the police also do it with seized stolen goods

LIZS · 25/06/2007 17:12

oh yes , don't dare argue with the Swiss ! It's the Rules . I suspect it gets recycled but yes 2 100ml bottles wodul ahev been fine.

How was the trip btw ?

MissTea4Me · 25/06/2007 17:20

Not sure how the the pink furry handcuffs I had confiscated a few years ago would have helped the homeless...

I was on my way to a hen party, OK?

sammac · 25/06/2007 17:31

OOOOO a bugbear of mine- I had just bought a Mac lipgloss and mascara at Gatwick when the fire alarm went off and we were sent outside. When we eventually were found(cos no-one came for us) we had to go through security again and my new, still in the box make-up was taken off me. The condesending security women told me that everything is destroyed when I asked what happened to my lovely new stuff. Rather than risk getting put off my flight for being cheeky my answer remained in my head!!!

JoolsToo · 25/06/2007 18:01

when i flew back from barbados in march 2007 we had no checks at all

I took on with a me a 3/4 full 2 itre bottle of water..

my lugagge also weighed bearly 40kg

we have no cheacks at all and could bring whatever we wanted on the plane.... except for knives and razor blades and stuff like that

Skribble · 25/06/2007 23:43

They are usually binned, new regulations have been in place for a while now and info at airports, so wonder why you took such big bottles in the first place.

No wonder there are such big queues at the security check area .

JoolsToo · 26/06/2007 00:07
  1. because I'm thick!
2. because I did suddenly think in the early hours of the morning 'maybe I should put that soap bag in my suitcase' but our luggage was 'fly luggage' and already had left the building!

I still think it's mad that I could take half a dozen 100ml bottles but one 250ml is not allowed
