dull re-wiring question

libb · 31/08/2004 17:46

I have just had a quote for re-wiring our house and it was £1380 (including the shower being fitted!). Is this too cheap? how can I check he is approved? what should've I asked him? am I being too suspicious?

I hate it when I have loads of questions ready and then my mind goes blank when the person arrives . . . .

I will Yorkiegirl - was just surprised as this house is in a dire state and I was expecting a price that would make me keel over or something! it doesn't seem as bad as expected . . .

are they a member of a trade body? you can get them checked out. also ask about how long work guaranteed for.

Tell him you want an inspection testing certificate at the end. Only a qualified inspector can issue it, you'll be charged for it I think about £50 or so. It basically attests to the fact that you have had the house re-wired or whichever part and that it's to a certain standard. Sometimes electricians don't necessarily change the wiring only the covers that you see and this is the only way you know they've done the job.... OK so dp is an engineer that's how I know

how big is your house?

I had a quote for re-wiring and my house is 4-storey and it was 2k

BIL got quoted £1500 4 a 3-bed semi (Oxfordshire).

libb · 31/08/2004 18:54

ours is a 3 bed semi too - just outside Cambs. Guess it must be about right . . .

Libb,I used to work for East Midlands Electricity organising rewires & can tell you that the price quoted is very cheap. Is the guy a member of a trade association? The 2 major ones are The ECA -Electrical Contractors Association & the NICEIC-The National Inspection Council for Elecrtical Installation & Contracting. If he is,it sounds a fab deal-if not I'd be very wary-rewires are not something to mess around with & if he bodges it & someone else has to come in & put it right they will charge the earth.

We just had a 3 bed semi completely rewired and the electrician was a friends dad ( so we trusted him but he wasn't giving us a discount so the price can be compared).

He charges £40 per point - a "point" being either a socket or a light fitting. ( sorry if i'm stating the obvious but i didn't know what he meant by a point.)
