Please reassure me. My phobia is making me worry about my kids day out tomorrow.

I absolutely hate thunder and lightening.
We are forecast thundery showers here tomorrow. DD1 and DD2 are going on a girlguiding day out to Brownsea Island and I am so worried about them being there. They go on a boat to the island and there isn't a lot of shelter on the island - mostly trees .
It even crossed my mind not to let them go but DH keeps telling me they will be fine.
I have to say I'm so frightened for them. I haven't told them how I'm feeling. They are really excited and looking forward to their day out with their friends and guiding carers, without mum and dad.

Oh, poor you, that sounds awful. But you've called it a "phobia" so you do know that however real and horrible your fear feels, it's not rational, don't you?

Sparkler · 22/06/2007 22:09

I think I'm more upset with the lightening than the thunder. You hear about so many awful things that happen with lightening.

Please do not pass your fears onto your kids. My mum admitted to me only last year that she was terrified of thunder, but deliberately kept quiet so as not to pass her fear onto me. I absolutely love thunder and lightening storms... soooo thrilling and exciting!!! My DD was very dismissive of others at school who were scared... when she was about 7 she said to classmates 'how can you be scared of weather!

It's rare for anyone to be in affected by lightning.

And the adult Guiders will be trained in how to deal with such a situation.

Honestly, your dds will be fine!

I won't pass my fears onto my kids. I have no idea how I do it but whenever we have had storms in the past I have always told them how amazing it is and watched it with them. Inside I've been pooing myself.
I also have a fear of heights. I also don't want to pass that onto them so much that I actually when on a huge slide with them at Blackgang Chine a few weeks ago just to show them it was ok. I felt sick as a pig when I did it but I did it and am in no hurry to repeat that experience.

Well done sparkler.... grit your teeth and let them go... smile all will be well.

Sparkler · 23/06/2007 13:08

They've gone and I stood at the quayside waving them goodbye with a smile on my face. We've had lots of rain but no sign of thunder yet.

Well done you, Sparkler! Did they have a great day?

Sparkler · 23/06/2007 22:38

kerrymum - I'm so glad I read your post now and not earlier.
They had a marvellous day thanks for asking MuminBrum. I asked DD's if they got caught in the rain too much and DD1 said they weren't too bad. She also went on to tell me that they heard a clap of thunder while they were there!!!!
