Oh No, I found mouse droppings in my kitchen

We have been putting in a fitted kitchen and I was sorting through the last couple of boxes this morning and I found at the bottom of it some mouse droppings and a half eaten packet of custard! What should I do? There are no mouse droppings anywhere else that I can see. I would hate one of those mouse traps that snap shut on the mouse as I would have to get rid of a dead mouse then. Can I put down a deterrent or something. I have a dog so something that the dope won't eat!

it might just be a field mouse if it has just come in and then gone again.

We had mice in our last house and I would kill them, sorry. If you have no other pets poisin is supposed to be the best. If you do have them, use traps. I did, after you have cleaned up the first dead mouse it does get easier, honest

We had mice a few years ago and they were in my towel drawer and in my cupboard eating flour........bleeee! Was too scared to open the cupboard!! Anyway, we got mouse traps that they run into and they can't get out and then you release them outside. Think it's Renotkill that does them....think we got ours from B&Q. You can also get things that you plug in that sends out a high pitched frequency that sends them away!? From Bettaware...but I'm not sure about whether they work or not.

We live just off a main road and there is an empty building just up the road. I'm worried incase we have a whole family of mice living with us! If we put poison down, won't the mouse (assuming it is just one we have!) crawl away somewhere and die and make a horrid smell? I really can't see me collecting and throwing out dead mice. I suppose DH could do that for me!!!

kid it would go off and die but they usually die outside

TraceyP · 31/08/2004 12:19

You can get humane traps which tip up and close when the mouse goes in - but you've then got a live mouse to get rid of which might be even worse! I used them a few years ago and they do work. A good bait to use is fresh peanuts, mice love them.

Fio2 · 31/08/2004 12:27

peanut butter, thats what I used as bait. Chocolate is supposed to be good too

Hi Kid, we had a mouse in our kitchen a few weeks back. It was a field mouse and we did kill it. Dp is an ex pest controller and said the following

'buy a metal or wooden mouse trap. When handling it if poss were rubber gloves as the scent of humans will stay on the trap for a couple of daus and a mouse won't go near it.
Chocolate is the best thing to bait it with.'

Good luck

Just spoke to DH, he is going to bring something home from work to get rid of it. I can just imagine putting down the metal mousetrap, using chocolate as bait and having to rescue DS (2) from the trap! Thanks for the tip about wearing gloves nutcracker, wouldn't have thought of that. I hope the mouse has been scared off already. Do they tend to stay where food is or could it be upstairs in my bedroom? [shiver]

I used a spade to pick the trap up with!

paranoia or what?!

kid · 31/08/2004 13:26

I didn't realise I was scared of mice until this morning. I will have to wait in the garden while DH gets rid of it, or better still, at someone elses house!

An update on my mice!
I put down the traps and the little sod keeps nicking the chocolate off it and not getting caught. I thought I had set it correctly but I must have done it wrong. DH looked at it and he thinks it is set right but so far the mouse or mice haven't been near the traps since Friday night. Probably full up with all the chocolate I've been feeding them!

A tip we were given several years ago was to put the traps along the wall as the mouse would go next to wall rather than accross open floor. Also agree with peanut utter as it will take longer for mouse to eat it.

We have 2 cats now so no mice etc.

Tessiebear · 05/09/2004 09:56

I would put down more than one trap ... you are bound to get him in the end

kid · 16/09/2004 11:47

We have now caught 4 mice. 3 on the traps (set with chocolate covered raisins, and one with a flying trap!!! When one of the mice triggered the trap, it jumped up and hit the other mouse right in the face! It stunned it long enough for us to catch it in a bucket. I then had to take it for a walk in the middle f the night to dispose of it as DH refused to get dressed to take it out!
Still got one trap left but no sign of any mouse for a few days now. But, the council have just started clearing a massive empty building just next door so no doubt there will be loads of mice looking for a new home!
