Intruders in the loft or just rodents??

This is going to sound very far fetched but bare with me...

Over the past few months I have heard noises in the house during the night, it sounds like things being moved, dropped, walked into...footsteps etc...before now I have even armed myself and gone downstairs with my heart skipping beats to investigate but I never find anything.

Last night there was ALOT of noise coming from the loft, it sounded like carefully placed footsteps, the odd noise of something being dropped or bumped into, creaky floor board sounds (from the loft) and then noises in the house again, as if someone was downstairs but my purse was left out on the kitchen table, ps2 games, mobile phones etc and everything was still there this morning.

Anyway I assumed it must be mice in the loft (they have been in there before) but this didn't sound like mice, I questioned rats but have been told rats would be obvious as the noise would be OTT...so I just asked my neighbour if she heard anything and she said she didn't last night as she was fast asleep early but she has heard similar noises before, footsteps AND things HAVE gone missing from her house before, never valuables but clothes, personal things AND she is sure that a woman in our block often goes out wearing the same clothes as the ones that have gone missing...her mum was stood with her and backed her up saying she's been saying that there is someone in the loft for weeks...

Question is...are we getting carried away? I know she could be exagurating about the clothes for a bit of drama but its not completely unreasonable to question it....

What do you think?

Have you checked your loft? Often if you are terraced you can walk/crawl through to next door

Hassled · 18/06/2007 11:47

Call the police next time you hear things - take a phone up to bed with you. I called the police out thinking I'd been broken into one night (I think it was actually the cats having a scrap and breaking a milk bottle ) and the police were fine about it, said all the right "better to be safe.." stuff etc.

Tentacles · 18/06/2007 11:47

It'd freak me out, sorry.
I'd get someone up there and have a look. Could you strategically place things in the loft, see if they get moved or taken? block off your loft space (maybe a builder could brick it up)

AbRoller · 18/06/2007 11:49

OMG, that would totally scare the crap outa me!

so can someone from another house walk into your loft from next door?

AbRoller · 18/06/2007 11:50

sorry, that last sentence didn't make sense but you know what I mean.

omg that is very scary. i dont think you getting carried away at all. i think you need to get up there during the day when there is no noise and try and check it out.

AbRoller · 18/06/2007 12:11

Did ye find out what it is yet?

Hulababy · 18/06/2007 12:13

That wpuld freak me out.

Snakepit · 18/06/2007 12:15

There are 4 houses in this block and you can walk through the entire block through the loft...the other morning (early hours) I kept hearing a noice like a mobile phone text alarm every few minutes but it was nothing like my ring tone, I don't even have that tone on my phone but it sounded very close by...I've also heard talking but the walls are very thin so that couldve been next door.

Surely if someone was coming into the house though I would've caught him/her by now? When I get up they would have to make a dive for the loft door which would make a racket...and why wouldnt they take my purse etc? or would they be afraid that I would call the police when I noticed?

It doesnt make sense, it sounds too much like someone is in the house/loft to ignore but it also sounds inpractical that that could happen...

Eek, that loft scenarion would give me the creeps. Can't you get it sectioned off for fire safety reasons so that no-one can access your property's loft.

Definately put a lock on the access door to the loft a.s.a.p.

Could you hang a load of cheap metal dangly/clanky mobile type/things from the beams so that you can be sure the intruder is in "your" section of the loft

AbRoller · 18/06/2007 12:53

1)put lock on the hatch asap
2)look into having loft sectioned off and secured
3)I will send you my MIL-to-be. Leave her or something equally as scary up there whilst waiting for (2) to be completed

Tentacles · 18/06/2007 16:39

Have you gone and investigated yet?

NannyL · 18/06/2007 21:02

OMG that sounds terrifying...

I agree with the others.... go up in the loft and have a look to see if you can physically get into your neighbours loft...

and if you cany make sure you lock your loft hatch ASAP.... that sounds really frightening.

Let us no how u get one!

Snakepit · 18/06/2007 21:04

I'm sending my "partner" up on thursday night, may as well make some use of him lol

Until then I'm going to sleep with music on so I don't hear it, I got no sleep last night at all because of it.

PUT A LOCK ON THE LOFT HATCH. Or just fecking BOARD IT OVER. Why HAVE loft hatch anyway???? ARE YOU CRAZY? NAIL BOARDS OVER IT NOW

Wishfulme · 15/01/2024 12:57

I hope it's not anyone entering your home as I've had similar thing happen to me. Place next to me empty yet I could hear like footsteps voices and a noise from a mobile. I hope I'm wrong about things because non of it makes sense to me either why would you risk getting caught for no reason. Good luck I hope you find out whats happening and its nothing to worry about.
