Go and buy a toilet plunger from a DIY store, put in the toilet and pump up and down. It will cost you a fiver at most. If you call a plumber you can multiply that by 10.

If all else fails go back to DIY store and buy a bottle of One-Shot. Ignore the instructions about dosing, pour in the whole bottle. Leave for 20 mins then hopefully blockage will have gone. Treat very carefully this is concentrated acid, wear gloves and do not inhale fumes. Pour extremely carefully so no splashing. Keep children out while it's soaking.

I cleared all toilet blockages in my four B & B premises for years and years with these two methods and never had to pay a plumber for this particular job.

Caustic soda gets my vote. I've used it several times (3 boys with an interest in all things toilet-related ). You can get it from supermarkets or hardware stores. Very easy to use, although not with children around and make sure all windows are open as it can take your breath away.

Isn't he handy?

Still would have liked him to open the cap at the side of the drain just for the novelty factor and photo opportunity!

So Mr Lou is also Mr Loo?

lou33 · 28/08/2004 22:45

Hehe.

essbee and/or lou, let us know what was done to unstop the drain!

I very curious in a "I could need to know" type way

lou33 · 29/08/2004 14:18

He poked his rods down from the toilet jj. When he lifted the drain lid it was clear, so the blockage was somewhere between the toilet and the main drain. His rods are long and extendable, and v flexible, so it only took a few seconds. We were hoping that it wouldn't work though, as on the side of the drain pipe, there was a cap, which he would have had to unscrew to put the rods in there, and we were looking forward to it all gushing out at him, so we could take a picture!

PMSL at Lou's DH and his extendible, flexible rod. And he has more than one too - what a useful man. Snort!

And he knows how to use it Soupy.....

JJ · 29/08/2004 14:41

If I ever meet your husband, Lou, the thought of him poking his rods down a clogged toilet will spring to mind.

Glad it's sorted!

Branster · 31/08/2004 10:34

I'm glad it's sorted essbee! As for lou33'DH , I am most impressed with how flexible and long his rod(s) is (are)!

lou33 · 31/08/2004 14:01

Tis true. He says the older he gets the more flexible they become

Fio2 · 31/08/2004 14:03

Lou33 cant you send hime round here? drain dr is very unreliable

but my last plumer said if dr drain dont do it he will put his arm up there for me

lou33 · 31/08/2004 14:33

If you lived closer he would certainly shove his rods in there for you

Grommit · 31/08/2004 15:42

If I lived closer I would send my mum around with a plunger - she has just unblocked mine
