I have just started out as a doula, intent to train as a childbirth educator......i did not want to go back to my previous job after being at home, and then having DD.....it is not a stupid idea, i can think of few things more satistying than supporting women at a wonderful, fulfilling, yet emotional and vulnerable time, and doing something to make birth a positive and rewarding experience.

Pruners, I'm sure you could, I'm hopefully going on the Nurturing birth course soon, and I have had huge hang ups in the past about my birthing experiences. FWIW i think that it's fantastic to be able to turn your bad experiences in to positives for others, and it sounds as if you're just lacking a liitle confidence rather than something that would really hinder you.

I think all the energy you have re pregnancy will be well placed as a doula, and maybe it's just what you need to help you move on??

dollydumps · 14/06/2007 22:21

Lulu,

how did you get into this sort of work? I've been really interested since having my daughter a year ago, but am frightened to bite the bullet and go for it.

Pruners, if you think it will make you feel bad, maybe it's not right for you? However you say you're dealing quite well with the situation, so maybe it would be something really worthwhile to focus on?

lulumama · 14/06/2007 22:29

Pruners ( is that you pruni??) maybe focusing on other women and their births will be a benefit to you..and you can take some pressure off yourself to get pregnant.....IFYSWIM

i think if you have a yearning to do something like this, and feel it is a vocation almost, then you should go for it, it is truly rewarding

dolly..i found out about doulas whne pregnant with DD and wanting a VBAC....none where i live, and then after i had her, and had an amzing birth, i carried on learning about birth and VBAC and found nurturing birth were running a training course in my area

so i applied, did the course, got registered on www.doula.org.uk and got started

many thanks, going for a look just now!

Pruners, best of luck in making your decision. xx

WideWebWitch · 15/06/2007 07:35

I think you could make the decision to go for whatever work/training you want and if you get pregnant then deal with it then. One doesn't necessarily preclude the other imo.

What makes you think you arent a good candidate to be a midwife? You have experience, insight and a sense of mission. I dont think the academic requirements are that overawing.

I agree with www. there's really no downside to getting on with training/developing a new career.

Pruners, as a midwife you're an autonomous practioner so you don't have people bossing you about. You and the woman together make decisions. Yes there are hospital policies, etc. But you don't have to stick to them, as long as you can back your practice up.

Loads of m/ws don't do things by the book all the time when the policy in question might not be right for that woman. I've never seen anyone get into trouble with the coordinator for it.

you going to apply for midwifery then??

WideWebWitch · 15/06/2007 13:55

Pruni, imo you shouldn't put your life on hold while you're trying for a baby. Good for you (presuming you've decided to go for it!)
