Would like to buy my DSs something to remember my gran by.

My gran died earlier in the month, and has generously left my DSs £1,000 each. They are 10 and 11. I will put the money in a savings account for when they're older, but I'd like to use £100 or so of the money to buy them something they can keep forever. I don't necessarily want something that will appreciate in value - like wine or art - but rather something that they can look at as adults and remember their great-gran. Any suggestions?

What sort of thibgs did she like?

BreeVanDerCamp · 11/06/2007 20:36

Cuff links.

How about a lovely photo of her turned into a painting?

Or put together a compilation of photos onto DVD along with video clips and favourite songs she had.

What about a pair of cufflinks each? I know they're young for them now but it will only be a few years before they might wear them. Nice to keep forever.

JetPeanut · 11/06/2007 20:39

ooh snap! I'm such a slow typist!

Chelseamum · 11/06/2007 20:40

a lovely silver frame?

BreeVanDerCamp · 11/06/2007 20:40

These are slightly funky, so I should think they would not date, too quickly.

Rhubarb · 11/06/2007 20:41

But do you not have to have special shirts for cufflinks? You can't just put them onto ordinary shirts can you?

Dh bought himself a pair once and never wore them, don't know where they are now.

Does she have any books or letters or anything that are left to the family? My Gran has recently sold their house as my grandad died last year and Gran is now living with my aunt. Gran asked me if I wanted to take anything from the house so I took a few books, a mug that I remember my grandad using, a few small things I had given them as presents when I was a child and a set of cards that they taught me to play cards with.

A good pen?

MrsMuddle · 11/06/2007 20:54

Oh, thanks. Lots of good ideas here. I have already kept back some books from her house - children's ones and ones they might enjoy as adults. I like the idea of cufflinks and a pen, but I just know that a pen would eventually get lost. At least with cufflinks, you'd keep them in a drawer and only bring them out when you were going to wear them. I'll buy a photo frame too, and get a nice photo of her and the boys to put in it. Thanks, everyone, for all your suggestions. I couldn't think past a hipflask!

A scrapbook detailing her life and what kind of person she was?
