Whilst out with dd and ds this afternoon, I happened to see this newspaper clipping which mentioned the word alcoholic....so I read some more....and it said that alcoholics and people who suffer from depression are lacking (4 letters GCBE or something like that) which makes them suffer from anxiety more and makes them hit the bottle to get rid of these feelings...IT IS GENETIC...not that am alcoholic or anything but very interesting snippet I thought I'd share as I thought there had to be a reason why some people drink and some people don't...if anyone wants to discuss this at all that would be good

do you think it's genetic then? (it's a newspaper but these things can always be open to interpretation tbh, like the detox thread thing)

I'm sure there is a genetic component. Alcoholism does run in families, and it's true that some people can drink a lot of alcohol without becoming alcoholic (not me of course ) while others can't. So yes, I do believe that genetics plays a role.

Personally I believe in the 'Addictive personality', you are either prone to addictions or not. Now is the addictive personality genetically conceived....I don't know! But I should think that it is very likely.

Interesting. DH's db is an alcoholic yet dh and his ds are fine - same upbringing etc. I think it is more to do with addictive personality although what they witness growing up must have an influence. Dh's parents are strict t-totallers.
His db is coming to stay on Wednesday so guess I'll get more of an insight

I don't know whether it's directly genetic, but I'm sure that there is a physiological component in some people's alcoholism. I have met people who became addicted to alcohol immediately on their first drink, and I think that points to something physical going on, rather than just psychological.
