good area to move to in SW London or Surrey commutable to Waterloo

We currently live in zone 3 SW London, good area, but a bit pricey. We rent, so we would like to move a bit to the south, south west. We will still rent at first, with the plan to buy if we like the area and we can afford.
We have a 3 year old DC and a second on the way, so it has to be a family friendly area with good schools and nurseries, safe and clean, etc.
And it has to be in good commuting distance to Waterloo.

We have Guildford and Surbiton in mind, but want to hear more opinions.

Many thanks.

Hampton is lovely, if you can get near the river.

East Molesey is just over the river from Hampton, and also seems very nice. I know there are plenty good primaries round there.

We are having same prob at moment as well. We live in Putney which is lovely, but can't afford a three-bed house and we also have one DC now and another on the way... We have a map of SouthWest trains network and have looked up how long it takes to get into Waterloo from any that we like the look of. Have been looking at Winchester which is expensive but nothing compared to SW London. 55 mins into Waterloo so quite a long trek for DH.

Egg my parents live in Winchester and it is pricey, but if you go slightly out of Winchester it is cheaper (eg Chandlers ford).

Egg · 11/06/2007 19:48

Ah thanks ComeOVeneer but Chandlers Ford I think you have to CHANGE at Southampton to get into Waterloo, and the journey takes a lot longer. DH reckons an hour max on the train, plus we need to be 10 mins walking distance from the station at home as well... We are hoping to give Winchester a go as we have been to visit and checked out various areas. Will probably rent our place in London and rent in Winchester first, to make sure it is doable...

I don't know what it's actually like to live there, but I've been to Wraysbury (on the direct line into Waterloo) and thought that it looked very nice.

Egg -- we live in Putney too, and did at one point think about moving to Winchester (I think we've decided to stay put and hope for a lottery win...)

Villages around Woking - 45 minutes MAX to Waterloo.

Hampton & Teddington are really nice. There is Bushy Park, lovely primary schools (I think secondary can be a bit hairy if you don't have a girl!) nice shops, near Kingston for John Lewis & Heals etc. If these look a bit expensive check Hampton Hill (with its fab farmers market) and Fulwell which has train to Waterloo (stopping).

Godalming and villages around there(Milford, Witley, Wormley, Farncombe). 45-50 mins to waterloo, reasonable service and if you board pre Guildford you usually get a seat

ChippyMinton · 12/06/2007 11:19

If you are looking west - richmond, twickenham, hamptons, wraysbury, windsor - check the aircraft noise.
I am just south of heathrow airport and we miss most of it because we are too close to be overflown. But lots of the nice places are right under the flight paths.

lou33 · 12/06/2007 13:40

meowmix, i am in one of those villages you mentioned

ComeOVeneer · 12/06/2007 13:45

Noodlestroddle, where and when is Hampton Hill's farmer's market.

CristinaTheAstonishing, just out of curiosity, are you looking to move out of Wimbledon because of the same reason, that is trying to get more for your money or do you have other reasons as well, i.e. better schools, quieter place, etc?
