Smelly bin bags.. what can we do?

we have a collection on Monday, but the bin bags
outside are absolutely stinking - (what with the warm weather etc)
Have tried throwing bleach over them, not much help, and the smell of rotting waste is disgusting, any ideas?

stick them in the car and drive (FAST) to your nearest refuse tip/skip place.

Have done this on a number of occasions. If you leave the car windows open afterwards it doesn't leave a long term stink.

Try putting them in bins with good fitting lids so that the stench is contained. When the bins have been emptied then they can be washed with a hot bleach solution but I can't see that throwing bleach over bin bags is going to make any difference. It's what's inside that pongs.

Clean the bins every time you empty them with bleach. If that doesn't work, put them right down at the bottom of the garden where you can't smell them!

out of interest, how many bin bags do you lot go through per week?
We have 2 proper outside bins, but on the last count,we have 5 bags to put out on Monday (so 3 that are outside stinking)..
do we need to get another 3 outside bins?

1 (DH is a keen, not to say fanatical recycler!!). I do end up taking the nappies to the bin on the street every couple of days tho -we live in a flat so would have to wheel the wheely bin up some nasty stairs so its not worth our using it!!!

bea · 22/08/2004 08:19

our collection is on fridays! and we put out one bin bag!... we recycle all the paper, glass etc, we use cloth nappies (so there's only the odd disposable to chuck - used when we've ran out of clothies or am feeling incredibley lazy! ) no food waste as dh eats everything!!!!and we compost all our peelings etc... so really our bins are bins are just a little 'fragrant'!

ever thought of composting? it's dead easy... once you get organised...and if you're not a keen gardener you can still compost... using your compost bin as an alternative bin...

I have heard that baking soda sprinkled in every now and again is a good odour eater. Not tried it myself.
At Lakeland plastics you used to be able to buy bin odour eaters that hung on the side adn were quite good and I think John Lweis do a bin air freshner type spray but don?t quote me on that one - can?t remember exactly where I bought it from and was a couple of years ago.
TBH the best thing is to bleach and clean first, recycle as much as possible and use a compost bin for as much fruit, veg things. It is the nappies that stink in my bins despite the supposedly odour neutralising powder in them. Not prepared to use reusable nappies so will just put up with it. It is horrible - we have a fortnightly collection here and the flies are dreadful. You have my full sympathies.

sorry about rubbish typing - baby on my knee. Had better go and be a mum again

MeanBean · 22/08/2004 13:48

I used to have 3 or 4 bags per week until I started composting. It then went right down to 2.

Bibiboo · 23/08/2004 14:55

We recycle glass, paper and tins, keep them on shelves in the shed plastic tidy boxes (from Hypervalue or somewhere) and taken them to recycling bins when we do our weekly shop.
We also compost all our peelings, kitchen scraps etc in a bin at the bottom of the garden and typically only "put out" about 2 bags a week. I am also fanatical about squashing things up so they take up less space and quickly swilling things out before binning them (like milk cartons) to make less of a stink outside and keeps the local dogs from ripping the bags open. Also, every time we wash the cars, we fill the wheelie bin with water and flash (floor cleaner) to get rid of the pong. It;s all more effort, but after a bout a month it's like second nature anyway.
Gosh, we sound very much like Tom and Barbara from The Good Life! hehehe

Titania · 23/08/2004 14:59

we have about 7 a week!!! There is some freshener stuff called zoflora. You add it to water. I chuck it in the bottom of my wheelie bin. Is very strong stuff!!! Smells flowery.
