DH has been offered a large payrise and a free house in Southport so we are moving! It is a really good opportunity for him and we are really happy but now I am in a flap about all the things we need to do!!! Can anyone help get my head straight with some useful tips/lists of things to consider? Thanks DH interview was only yesterday so I am in shock a bit!

First of all - many congratulations on the payrise, house and job! Now, breathe!!! Good, now check on the web - there are loads of excellent sites about moving and timescales - I used them when I moved. Many are attached to removal companies, but you can find others that are independent. Good luck. Oh, my biggest tip, if you can afford it, get someone in to do the packing - it saves so much hassle.

schneebly · 07/06/2007 09:23

thank you - I am totally overwhelmed and I have never really moved before (apart from studenthood!) Will take a look!

how exciting - you'll be by the sea - lovely. where are you now?

UnquietDad · 07/06/2007 09:31

A free house??

WTF kind of job do you have to do to get a free HOUSE?

Is he a vicar?

Sunshinemummy · 07/06/2007 09:33

Agree with Stargazer definitely get someone in to pack and move for you. After recommendation on here I used Reliable Removals and they were great. DP, DS and I went out for the morning and when we came back our home was all packed up. Write yourself a project plan - I use Excel - of things that need doing, who's going to do them, when they need doing be and leave a big gap for notes. You can then tick this off as you go along. Things I had on there were people I needed to engage, e.g. removals firm, builders, cleaners etc., people I needed to inform such as banks, credit cards, work, subscriptions, and things I needed to buy. Hope this helps and good luck.

lol not a vicar - he is a head greenkeepeer on a golf course. The job comes with a house on the course! 4 bedrooms too and paid coucil tax and electricity!

Sounds great, we're in North East England if you need a stop-over

Well done Mr schneebly

admylin · 07/06/2007 09:48

Sounds brilliant. We've moved 5 times since ds was born (he is now 9yres old) so I know from experience, use this time to sort and throw as much as you can. Also we moved on a really tight budget so it was a nightmare. I had to pack everything and then we did all the carrying ourselves. Get as much help as you can afford!
Do you know anyone where you will be living yet?

schneebly · 07/06/2007 09:54

flower thanks! Admylin - I met lulumama yesterday who is a close neighbour and she was lovely!

sounds fantastic. First thing I would look into is the schools I think if your dc are school-age.

Agree with admylin, start throwing out everything you don't need. I always accumulate tons of junk.

schneebly · 07/06/2007 10:08

I definitely need to throw some stuff out!!! I have e-mailed the school I think we are in the catchment for (it is a great one yay) I hope they have space! DS1 would be due to start reception in SEptember.

Ask around locally for a good recommendation for a mover - the big-name companies are not always the best or cheapest. We are moving in two weeks and the labour for packing the house up is costing us £85 which is SO worth it (I hate packing).
DS is 3 and we moved when he was two as well. Sample qs: Why do the movers get to keep all our stuff? (He hadn't realised we get it back again, poor thing) and "How do you move a house? I mean, how do you carry it?"
I think they understand less than we think about moving....

schneebly · 07/06/2007 10:16

pruni - thanks for the tips! and Awwww at your DS! I have a 3.5 yr old and a 2yr old and I think they will have plenty of questions too!

I have moved 14 times in 17 years - student moves (3 binbags sort of thing) and big moves.
Quite stressful!!

MrsJohnCusack · 07/06/2007 10:28

hey congrats Mr Schneebly. how exciting!

schneebly · 07/06/2007 12:33

Thanks I am looking forward to it. The last couple of years have been difficult for me and I think this will be a lovely fresh start.
