Expensive face creams and other beauy products: Do they actually work?

I am having one of those days when you wake up and look in the mirror and see an old, tired crone looking back and you think "that can't possibly be me!" !! As a week in a health spa is as likely as a trip to Mars, I am seriously considering the many ridiculously expensive products on the shelves which promise to 'restore and revitalise', to 'let the real me shine through' etc etc.

As a bit of a Boots Own Brand girl, I would love to know whether anyone has any opinions as to the effectiveness of such products before I break the bank! Any recommendations would be more than welcome

can't believe you're asking that question, you young good-looking thing, you. It's me who needs it.

bossykate · 27/07/2002 19:31

CAM you sweetie! you have made my evening. thank goodness for dim lighting - a girl's (ahem!) best friend

and no you definitely don't need it!

CAM · 27/07/2002 20:55

well, thank goodness for Clarin's beauty flash balm!

I'm not a believer in expensive creams, I now use Oil of Olay total effects after using Vaseline cream for years! If they make a difference why don't all those mega rich women look wonderful and wrinkle free? Why do they all have face lifts? R

Rozzy, I am the other way round and have always used clinque and was thinking of swapping to clarins for a change - can I ask why you prefer clinique now?
Cam, beauty flash balm IS from the gods isn't it?!

Enid · 02/08/2002 19:03

I don't like Clinique, think its much too harsh for most skins. I occasionally still use the clarifying lotion, but use the no-alcohol one as the others are like paint-stripper!

Like Clarins a lot, esp their foaming face wash, energizing morning cream, hand cream and of course, beauty flash balm.

Dp bought me an incredibly expensive Guerlain face 'serum' that I have to say does give a really smooth, glowing effect. Unfortunately he bought it when we went on holiday, and as I was 9 weeks pregnant the smell made me feel sick and still does - I have to be looking very very crap to apply it.

I can recommend buying stuff from Strawberry.net. You accumulate discounts of at least 5% and never have to pay postage. Great for things like Clinique & Clarins products, although beware that if you spend more than £18 in one go, you will probably have to pay duty when the parcel arrives as it comes from Hong Kong. I've been using this place for a couple of years now and it's by far the cheapest, easiest way I've found of getting stuff.

expatinscotland · 01/11/2006 09:49

Ugggh, Enid, I feel that way about Clarins Eau Dyna-whatever in a red bottle.

I still can't smell that stuff and it's 4 years since I was pregnant w/DD1.

Oxocube - Decleor J10 is a great 10 day treatment and it gives you a real pick me up.

Enid - You sound like me, I am a sucker for lotions and potions. Just in case you get fed up with the Clarins Beauty Flash Balm (I did - got sick of the smell) Decleor do a similar one and it's less sticky, liking it better at the mo.

I don't work for Decleor by the way! I was a total Clarins girl but decided to try a new regime almost a year ago now and I love the Decleor face oils in particular.

10 spashes of cold water in the morning was a wedding tip I was given. Did that religiously for 4 months before and my skin was great then but sort of got out of the habit since!
