Does anyone go rock climbing? I have got one good female friend who regularly went with a club, and used to tell me lots of women do it, but I am very dubious and quite intimidated by the idea, whilst simultaneously wanting to try. Does anyone go indoor climbing? Do you think I should book a day course, or just try and get a friend to take me to try it out? Do you think it is a bad idea to go with a male friend because he would be much stronger and have a masculine climbing style?

I've never tried it but I bet it will be fantastic. I'd suggest just going with someone that you feel comfortable with, male or female but would certainly recommend doing a day course first so that you learn the safety aspects and basic skills from a qualified professional.

I tried it just the once - never again! I liked the abseiling, just not the climbing back up bit. I think it's a good idea to book a day course and then you can see what you think about it without feeling any kind of pressure to say you're enjoying it because it's your friend. It could also be a bit extreme emotionally the first time - you do butt right up against fear and there can be a lot of machismo in rock climbing which might affect how you handle it - I know I felt inhibited and like it wasn't 'safe' to show my emotions.

I did it years ago and would like to take it up again (not at 4 months pregnant though )

If you have a pal who does it then great as it's good to pick up on her experience. I know of no other person or pal who does it so I'd have to go along to a club. Previously I went with an older gentleman friend but he went a bit funny when I mentioned my boyfriend so farewell to that relationship.

Go for it. It's great fun and keeps you fit

I was a founder member of my university Rock-Climbing Club. Loved it! Had my first experience of rock climbing on an Outward Bound holiday in my teens. I think a day course would be a good taster, if only because of safety issues. Most of the other members of the uni club were men, but the only issue I ever had about climbing with men is that they were all piss-heads and I felt uneasy being belayed by a person with a hangover! But in fact the only accident that I recall during my time happened not on a climb but by a guy falling over the pub doorstep!

Lots of blokes do it but increasing numbers of women.

ah, beetroot, "go with whoever you fancy"-you have discovered how come I was so resistant to my female friend's enthusiasm for climbing, but am now suddenly interested. Whoever I fancy goes climbing 2-3 times/ week and would therefore probably be a terrible person to go with, and also has not asked me yet . However, this has made me think about xp and how I have enjoyed sports much more being single, with no one criticizing me, or boasting how much stronger, quicker, faster he is.

My Mum used to do it (how cool is that?) and my Dad - she made him pack it in when she had my little brother though. I wish I had tried it while I was at Uni, I'd be too self-conscious now. Go for it!

My 13 yr old niece does it and loves it, she is very small and slight so occasionally has trouble reaching the handholds on a climbing wall, but shouldn't be a prob for an adult i wd have thought
