Using an Estate Agent or Doing It Ourselves?

We are about to put our house on the market and are tempted to have a go at selling it ourselves. Our house is very 'saleable', i.e. in a good area, close to good schools and walking distance for the city (Exeter), etc.

Has anyone done this and what was it like? Am I deluding myself that I can save some easy money?!!!

DO IT!

DH advertised our house on the intranet at work, we had a response that very day, lady came round the next day and then put in an offer. We haggled for 2days and in the end got £2k less than the asking price but this was still good for us.

We would definately do this again and next time DH is planning on doing our own conveyancing, as our solicitor has been crap

We've saved lots of money and hassle by not using an estate agent, who IMO do very little for a lot of money!!

Give it a go. If after a few weeks you've had no response then maybe try an estate agent.

Good luck

Thanks Wellsie, when you put it that way we haven't anything to lose.

We've just sold privately - really recommend giving it a go. It saved us around £5k on estate agents fees.

It probably took slightly longer than with an estate agent - but we were in no hurry. And even then the house was only on the market for about 7 weeks before we got 3 offers of the asking price all on the same day, and ended up getting more than we'd expected for it!

We went with propertybroker.com, but I think they're just london based. They charge around £115 and for that they put up a board for you, take 5-6 digital photos inside and out which they post on their website. You do everything else - writing the blurb about the house, showing people round etc. A bargain, frankly. We liked being totally in control of the process.
