Moving to a new town, haven't a clue where to begin

Basically I don't know where to begin.

I need to find a house to rent, a primary school, possibly childcare and a job.

I am fairly sure that we will be moving in August (not sure what date yet) due to DPs job. Obviously rightmove etc for houses, but where do I start with the rest of it?

Please help, this seems very big and scary at the moment.

Why not tell us here what area you're movinvg to and see if mumsnetters can point you in direction for recommended local facilities?

scorpio1 · 01/06/2007 13:00

you need to try the local councils website for schools,a job, childcare, etc.

Also estate agents/local paper websites too.local papers will also advertise jobs. maybe put on your post where you are moving; a loal MN'er may be able to help a bit better.

Carmenere · 01/06/2007 13:00

Start at the Ofstead website and find the best schools in the area, then look for a house near there and a childminder from the Childrens Information Service.

Then try local jobsearch websites.

Voila!!

PinkMartini · 01/06/2007 13:15

Isn't there a Mumsnet local?
And Upmystreet for stats on different areas re crime, school catchments etc.
But def think your best bet to do is post "Moving to XXX, who can help?"
Good luck with it all

Off to Taunton

Taunton is where I am from. I lived there until ooh 6 yrs agho when we moved to London (now in Hampshire) In fact I am off to Taunton in a little while to visit my dad in hospital.

DS1 went to North Town school which was wonderful and according to friends and SIL still is now. There are lots of lovely villages around Taunton too, all with fabulous schools.

As I will be there this weekend I could send you the local weekly paper if you want. It may be helpful. E-mail me your address, [email protected] and I will post it when I return to Hampshire on Monday.

Somerset is a lovely part of the country and I am sure you will be happy there.

Thanks C&Dmummy, that's really kind of you. Will do that when I get home as my nasty employer won't let me access hotmail at work grrr

luczluutoo · 01/06/2007 15:54

I've just moved from Taunton,I'm not far from Taunton-bout 12 miles, but I lived there for 20 odd yrs..anything you need to ask, just shout..For schools-get in contact with Somerset County Hall Education Dept on 08453459122 , for rental properties like C&D'Smummy said Somerset County Gazette is ideal.Best of luck with the move-bloody stresssful ain't it?! P.s steer clear of Priorswood and Lambrook!

Cider is foul

Have paper for you now, so will send it as soon as I recieve your address.

Some parts of Priorswood are ok, not many admittedly, mind you the parts I'm thinkin are probably more Wellsprins. And Halcon/Lambrook a no no! Also not all of us from Somerset talk in 'Ooh aar' accents

wheresthevalium · 03/06/2007 08:40

Well I'm a Bristol girl anyway, so not much of a jump accent wise anyway!

What do we think of Monkton Heathfield?

Caleband Dylansmummy, will mail you now, internet has been off, Virgin are useless!

if you expect the move to be permanent start with what secondary school you want them to go to and work back from there. Don't know much about Somerset except that Hugh F-W (River cottage) has his kids at school in Somerset.

CalebandDylansmummy · 03/06/2007 17:23

Monkton Heathfield is lovely! Nice primary and secondary schools there too. Don't seem to have a mail yet, but will check later.

wheresthevalium · 03/06/2007 20:07

C&D-have sent the email twice now, have you got it?
