Nemo2007 · 31/05/2007 08:35

or will it just disappear into the back of a cupboard??????
Am looking at getting a 3.5l slow cooker to try and prepare some meals without having to worry about them while dealing with the demon children!! So how likely am I to use it? Also what recommendations for ones would you give?

We had one as a present a few years ago. It's nice, but we only used it a few times before it got left in the back of the cupboard! Really should get it out again. Just not been organised enough. Think it's a Panasonic but not sure.

I use mine loads...tis fab. I use it more in winter for casseroles etc but is also good for curry, chilli and the like. I also cooked a ham in it for the first time the other week and that was good too.

I just prepare it in the morning then at dinner time when you are knackered tea is already done...lovely!

I think ours is a Tower.

I use mine loads, and really missed it when it broke. You can buy cheaper cuts of meat and do them in there, they always turn out really tender and lovely.

I do joints of beef and pork in mine plus pork chops, chicken and then beef and chicken casseroles, spag bol, and chilli.

I love it when it comes to dinner time and all I have left to do is either some potatoes or rice.

I use mine about once a week in the winter months. Fab for having a hot meal ready when you get in. However, and its a big one, you do have to pre fry everything otherwise it doesn't taste that good. i tend to do that the night before once DS in bed, pop it in the fridge then dump in slow cooker in the morning, so its not exactly as hassle free as you would imagine.

NuttyMuffins · 31/05/2007 09:22

I only pre fry mince or diced chicken, oh and sometimes onion but thats not essential. Otherwise it all goes straight in and tastes lovely when cooked.

Nemo2007 · 31/05/2007 09:31

I dont think it will be hassle free but will just leave me free at witching hour with my lot[tea time]if it is already cooking for me..lol

Yep, it is alot less hassle Nemo, wouldn't be without mine.

go to www.savingdinner.com and download her free crock cooker mailer - there are some good recipes on there and you can buy more if you like

I have a book with a few staples in it (spag bol, macaroni cheese etc) but to be honest hers is better

putting your chicken carcass in the slow cooker overnight with a bit of veg to make a stock is far easier than pratting about boiling it for an hour - freeze in small quantities and then you can make fab soups in a minute by defrosting frozen stock and slamming some veg in and blending

I love mine it is fab knowing that your meal is made and it doesn't matter that the kids are happy playing in the park late because their dinner is ready as soon as you get in the door

I'd really rewcommend this one from Argos.

Cookworks Round 3.5 Litre Slow Cooker - 420/7490

It's a really good one and for £11.32 you just can't go wrong

lilolilmanchester · 31/05/2007 15:02

lilolilmanchester · 02/06/2007 22:46

I have a slow cooker and we use it all the time, during the week bung braising steak in (don't fry first) with tons of carrots and onions on top, leave it all day yum. The juices from it are great for baby to mash up with veg.
Have done wonderful rice pud in it too.
The lamb shanks on Boxing day we put in it at 2am and the inlaws are still raving about it!
my first one was a large capacity but was wide and shallow, took up a ton of room and the food was all spread out on the bottom! Mind you it did fit a whole chicken.. took up too much room in the cupboard so I shopped around and got one that is a deeper style. I stagger in the door with 2 tired hungry kids at 5.45 and tea is ready. Mine is a really cheap make I picked up at one of those home and bargain type places.

use mine loads too in late autumn and winter - until DC's are saying, please not ANOTHER casserole tonight Mum ...

WTF - they can make the effort to prepare dinner if they complain again!

Peachy · 03/06/2007 00:35

we love ours

Only an Asda one and Dh was very s we have a tendencyb towards gadgets that sit useless in cupboards (like the, erm, sodastream dh will not ditch despite my pleas) but the slow cooker is excellent, really good. Often do a 'roast' in it as always far more tneder than if done in the oven.
